This has a great brass body with the patina of many years of handling. It comes with an iron stand that has an adjustable table that uses a joystick type handle to position the platform. There are many places where this is adjustable. Or threaded areas to attach different lenses, etc. very complex construction for a time when transportation was by horse or possibly early steam engine railroad locomotive. We have not seen a date on it anywhere, but with photos available online, we estimate this as being from 1843-1848, a similar model identified on the Golub Collection website. The body with this unit is not attached to the stand at this time. You can see mounting holes on the stand and on the tube, which measures approx. 9¾" long with a lens in place. Charles Baker Compound Monocular Microscope, Circa 1875 - 1885
CHARLES BAKER COMPOUND MONOCULAR MICROSCOPE. CIRCA 1875- 1885 Charles Baker began his optical business in London about 1851. He published scientific catalogs that included his microscopes. His business was located on High Holborn street in London. He did not often use serial numbers and his instruments are not easy to date. This microscope has a brass tube body that is mounted in a brass sleeve attached to a rackwood and limb. Allowing the tube to go up and down. The extended brass tube when racked up is about 13 1/2" in height and when all the way down is about 10 1/2" The rack and pinion is horizontal which was usually manufactured prior to 1880. The fine focus adjustment is located on the side of the brass tube body. There is a single unmarked eyepiece. The stage has a"patterned" design and is moveable. There are no ... moreslide clips on the stage. Beneath the stage is a reflection mirror that measures 2" in diameter and does swivel as designed. The mirror itself has some hazy oxidation but still works well. The microscope is mounted on a trunnion to pivot and has a black"claw foot" base. The lacquered finish is in good condition. On the rear of the black base is signed" Baker, 244 High Holburn, London" The case is in good condition, has oak finish with green velvet interior. There is a brass handle and a lock but no key. The case measures 16 1/2" H x 8" W x 6" D. There is no objective with the microscope. The microscope and case weighs about 9 pounds. An antique monocular compound Microscope by T Cooke of York. About 1860. Made of Brass and in its own fitted Mahogany Box. Two eyepieces and two objective lenses, whose power can be changed by adding/ removing elements. Live specimen holder. This Microscope does have some faults, namely, the bulls eye for illuminating specimens from above is missing and the slot at the front of the box probably held tweezers, which are missing. The adjusting/focusing knob does not work as it should, sometimes it slips and the tube moves down and other times it feels as though it catches, so some attention/ repair is needed here. The lenses are all good and it does give a respectably crisp and magnified image. The box is 11 x 6 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches and the Microscope stands about 12 inches tall withe the tube at midway height. Found this in an old apartment when he bought the units and were cleaning them up to rent out. it came from UVM years and years ago where it was used in bio and med school labs for students. in its day this was a respectable microscope with iris condenser and 4 objectives, ect. so martin, he gave it to me and figured i might fix it up, so i refurbished this cleaned it up re aligned everything and its now a perfectly viable scope. the objectives are 2: 10x.25 and its got a 40x and a 43 x. strange set up yes but still a cool scope for basic function.
