Antique / Vintage Cast Iron Nellis Hay Harpoon Spear Old Farm Tool Hooks
Up for auction is a cast iron Nellis Hay Harpoon in very good condition. It is mechanically sound and works like it should. It is 33" long. The spring loaded cocking mechanism works and the blades near the point open and retract like they are suppose to. There are no breaks or repairs. It has been cleaned of any loose rust and dirt then lightly oiled. Hay harpoons were used in the late 1800's and early 1900's to lift hay into the hay mow. They were attached to the fork pulley( drop pulley) and locked into a hay trolley. The trolley was positioned over the hay and the fork pulley was released from the trolley with the harpoon attached. It buried itself in the loose hay and the blades near the point opened up and the hay was then lifted by horses using the trolley. Up for auction we have what I believe is a scarce farm primitive hay spear. I purchased this item from an estate here in West Pa. and its condition at the time of purchase the spear was rusty. Dusty and crusty. At first, I was undecided in regards to what to do with this hay spear.so I took the spear to the local car wash and cleaned off years of dust and crust. After doing so I could see faint remains of the original paint, red paint on the bottom of the spear and black paint on the pulley housing, so that's when I decided to refurbish the spear.many hours of work later, this is what we have to offer at auction.
