Superb condition 3rd pattern British Commando FS Fairbairn Sykes fighting knife with excellent condition blade. Concentric ring grip copper over alloy stamped 4( WW2 manufactures hilt mould pattern. Molds numbered in batch 1 to 4- molds were destroyed at wars end) Thick blued steel crossguard unstamped. Brass"big domed" pommel nut. Machine made blade is wickely pointed and original factory blueing still very present. Original scabbard unstamped. Leather and stitching to scabbard and bottom metal mount excellent, 2 out of the 4 leather tabs for sewing the scabbard to your uniform are present(2 having been purposely removed) upper band to hold hilt to scabbard is nolonger present(very common) All up a very simply and desirable piece in very fine condition. History The British Commando knife was first designed in 1940 by close combat ... morelegends William Fairbairn and Eric Sykes. Who established and taught the combative training methods for wartime special forces such as the independent companies, SOE, Commandos, U.S Rangers and OSS. Though known as the FS Fighting knife, this was not designed to be a knife fighting knife. But primarily designed to be used in silent killing actions such as sentry take-outs. The techniques of effective use were taught to various special forces at Highland training centres such as Lochailort Special Training Centre(STC) and Achnacarry, which was the Commando Basic Training Centre(CBTC) from 1942-1945. 3 rd Pattern To support the demand for faster and cheaper production a new cast grip was produced. It is thought to be the design of the Joseph Rodgers firm. Of Sheffield. It had 27 concentric rings. And was cast in a non-strategic alloy.In about September of 1942, the so-called ring grip pattern was introduced, and quickly became standard. These are used and have some marks from the chuck. The shafts are all approximately 24 inches long and and 3/8ths inches in diameter. The impellers are hydrofoil style and are about 3.5 inches in diameter. The third is a marine style propeller and it is about 1.9 inches in diameter. One is sanitary welded and the others are a set screw attachment. The blade diameters are approximate they vary a few thousandths. They are stainless(unknown grade) hydrofoil impellers are high speed impellers that are commonly used to mix light liquids that are prone to settling. This is a vintage brass prop that should/may fit many different years and size. I am not sure what year or size motor it will fit. The numbers on the prop are hard to read. On the end it looks like stamped Michigan AMC 332. It is about 8in across. The is one small chip in the blade. I t could be polished up very nicely. The part would be a great part if you are restoring an old outboard or if you needed one for your boat. Operation: The wire is fed into the machine through the wire guide bushing until it contacts the adjustable strip length stop. During this action the wire pushes on the back side of the spring loaded carbide stripping blade. Swinging it open. As the wire is drawn out of the machine the carbide stripping blade returns to it’s closed position, cutting the wire insulation to a controlled depth at the desired preset strip length.
