All of the mechanical and functional aspects are in very good condition and the reel feels and sounds very smooth. There are no bent or warped parts. There are some abrasions and scratches on this item(as shown in pictures) Someone has scratched their initials(NFM" NFFM" and what looks like"VIFF" into 3 interior sections on the reel(not visible when reel is operationally assembled) and 2 exterior areas(where it is mostly visible under the right light) Please refer to the pictures(I have documented these 5 areas) The black paint on the interior of the spool is worn and there are several scratches including one of the initialed areas(refer to photo) The top of the drag adjustment knob has 2 small nicks. The other 2 interior areas where the initials occur are approximately 1 inch from the exposed bearings on both sides of the body of the reel. The interior spool side is where it appears to have the"VIFF" There is also the outline of what appears to be some sticker that has fallen off(located next to the exposed bearings in photo) The final areas are on the exterior front and back face of the reel and I did not notice them until I had the reel under the perfect light(I owned this reel for years without seeing this) Also. There is an abrasion on the frame at the bottom of the reel(next to the bottom post) If you are considering buying this reel then you are most likely a serious angler and or collector so please study ALL pictures very closely with the zoom function. This bamboo fly rod is a 7'9" Hardy C.C. de France 2/1. This rod was purchased by me from a rod builder in Balmoral. Scotland. He had completely refinished the rod"modernizing" it with standing ring ceramic guides. The rod has been completely rewrapped and revarnished and the grip cleaned. This rod casts a 5 wt line a country mile with delicacy. It could be considered a medium fast action for a bamboo rod with a very definite dry fly demeanor. The rod is exceptionally well balanced and is a joy to fish. Although my traditional sensibilities have been assaulted by the addition of the standing ceramic guides, I have to agree with the rod builder that they cast much better than the original guides. As is traditional with European fly rods, this rod comes with its original rod bag, but no tube. Rod will be packaged securely ... moreand sent in a shipping tube. Shipping includes USPS tracking. This is a near mint condition Hardy The Phantom 8ft two piece 5wt bamboo fly rod. It includes the original Hardy Bros. cloth bag and ferrule plug. Only thing I can see to keep it from being mint is the cork is a little dirty from handling. Also included is the aluminum tube which has no markings so I'm not sure if that is original or not. I'm an ardent fisherman and thought I would take up Fly Fishing when I retired as I had been able to purchase this exceptional Hardy bamboo rod about twenty years ago from a close family friend that had belonged to their Grandfather. He had 5 Hardy Rods. Two of which they said he had never used. I choose The Kenya. Unfortunately no reels or other equipment were to be found. Now that I'm ready to take up the sport. I feel I should"walk before run" and find some less expensive equipment. While I know very little about this calibre of Fly rods, from what I have been able to determine, my Rod is highly regarded. To my knowledge it has never been fished. Hardy's had indicated that the Kenya Model was built from 1934 to 1957 and this superb Rod was made in 1950. Hardy Bros. 7’6” Marvel” bamboo trout rod. This is the famed“Marvel” series rod, and this one has two original tips. It comes with the all-cork reel seat and the abbreviated aluminum sliding band with the serial# H8451(1956) and the Hardy stamped aluminum butt cap. It has the agate stripping guide, and an agate guide on one of the tips. Both tips are full length, and they have their Hardy marked aluminum“stoppers” to keep the nickel silver ferrules clean) and the female ferrules have their nicely turned wooden ferrule plugs. I can’t explain why one tip has a Perfection top guide because both tips are the correct length. It may be that the second tip was refitted here in the US, but the original Hardy green cloth bag is a two-tip bag. I think I am correct that these Marvel series rods were made for the American market with actions that suited ... morestateside tastes, but I can report that the rod feels to my hand like it will match up with a 4 DTF line. The rod comes in the original Hardy Bros. stamped aluminum case. This rod has seen very limited use, it is in excellent, all original condition.
