Closed up the assembly measures 5" by 1½" by 1" 12.7x3.8x2.5 cms) Each spectacle frame measures roughly 4" 10 cms) wide. Each frame is stamped with a number. Presumably indicating the strength of the lens; numbering is 16, 18, 20 and 24 on one side. On the other side the numbering is 28, 30, 36? and 48. One lens is missing, slight frame damage on 28(see third from last photograph) and another is missing on frame 48. All the other lens are present and are in reasonable condition. The box has a lot of aligatoring to the finish and is in reasonable condition for it's age but could use a little strengthening in places. Leather handle is broken on one end. It has beautiful brass angle trim and corners. I will package this to the best of my ability for shipping. Please ask. This is a great set of lenses, including the frames! The frames are adjustable to accommodate different eye/facial structures, I'm assuming. We counted the lenses individually and came up with 197, and there are a few missing ones. I didn't pull every si ngle lens out b ut did come across one that had a crack in it. I couldn't find a name or date on any of the pieces. Including the box. It looks like the case was originally covered in leather and it has worn pretty much all away. There are some traces of leather on the bottom. It possibly had the name somewhere ... moreon the leather at one time. The original handle has been replaced by what looks like an old shoe string. The case has a closure lock that still works and you push a button to release it to open. When the case opens. A few of the lens fall out of there slots, not sure if there is supposed to be something to hold them back but will do so for shipping. I'm sure some of those lenses are out of their proper slots too. There are some pretty odd lens in there too, and we took pictures of these. Any questions let me know! Set of 219 Optometrist's Test Lenses in a wood tray/box in a bonded leather case. SPHERICAL CONCAVE(70 lenses minus 8) CYLINDRICAL COCAVE(44 lenses) and CYLINDRICAL CONVEX(44 lenses) SPHERICAL CONVEX(70 lenses) PRISMATIC(2 lenses minus 2) BLANK(6 lenses minus 3) COLORED(Red. Black, Smoke) 1 pair of fitting goggles with what looks to be celluloid ear and nose pieces and one hand held examination lens of some type. The velvet is a dusty/dirty in areas and the leather in the tray shows clear signs of its age-I am afraid to try to clean it so that is up to you. The outside of the bonded leather case is quite worn and the latches are damaged/broken so that it will not close tightly. The wear on the case's exterior indicates the case saw many miles in its day. The wood tray fits neatly in the leather case, which is also lined with maroon ... morevelvet. The velvet on the top and bottom of the case interior shows impressions where the lenses have pressed into the case for somewhere near 100 years or possibly more. This set would make an impressive display piece despite the wear of the case and the small percentage of loss to the lens collection(13 missing out of 232 originally fitted in the case) It is a fascinating antique curiosity. Steam Punk creators would find ample material for jewelry making and/or monocles on chains. These lenses are intriguing pieces of history and deserve to be seen or at least re-purposed.

Makers, Chicago, trial lens test set which consists of 250+ lenses, an F.A Hardy Geneva lens measure, and an American Optical trial lens frame. The Geneva lens measure determines the strength or diopter of an optical lens. And it works. There's a small chip in the glass face at the 5:30 position, and it can be reset to"0" These are usually missing in the trial lens sets. I believe the American Optical Company purchased F. A. Hardy& Company and the lens measure has an A.O.Co. mark at the bottom of the dial face. This set includes a broad range of spherical and cylindrical concave and convex lenses. I'm not knowledgeable about these sets but the top horizontal row is also comprised of many additional ... morelenses for optional tests. I believe. The quality wooden case is dovetailed at the corners, appears to be oak, and is lined with a soft maroon velvet material. This collectible. Retro technology lens set has no broken or missing items that I can find. The gap in the horizontal row of top lenses just prior to the"1" mark is not for a missing lens but is a section divider assumed to separate the two different types of lenses. This old trial lens set and accessories are in excellent condition. Present a great appearance, attract much interest, and are perfect for a collection, or as general scientific decor. Vintage Optometrist's Trial Lens Set, Only Slightly Used
This was a trial lens case that belonged to my father. Who was an optometrist for over 40 years in Oregon and California. He got it during the time he worked for Wesley Jessen in Los Angeles(see photo of label from the original shipping box) The set comes in a quality wooden case, is in nice condition and has its complete set of over 200 lenses, about half of which are still in their original plastic covers.
