vintage blacksmith hand forged tree climbing spikes spurs gaff old logging
Nice old pair of climbing spikes. Blacksmith made with forge welded hand hammered spikes. no markings that i could find. leather is very rotted with tears. one top strap is missing. they measure about 16 inches long. the spikes are about 3 inches long and the width of the boot opening is about 3 inches. these are early style as the iron straps go on the outside of the leg and the spike is on the open end. the dimensions of each vary slightly as they are hand made. I would not advise using these, They should be enjoyed as a fine antique and example of the blacksmith art.

Buckingham Bucklite Titanium Spurs. 2 3/4" tree gaffs. Come with bottom straps only. I used these with aluminum"caddy" pads and put some spray foam on them to keep them from rattling. That's the residue you see in the pics. I had a knee operation so I switched over to pole gaffs last year and don't use these anymore. Gaffs could probably use a touch up but I liked them without a needle point. These sell for $349 new.

Which is probably the retailer where they were purchased. The shaft by the spike says" Mine Safety Appliances Co. Pitteburgh, PA. MSA-Brooks Climber" The leather looks to be in good shape with no holes. Tears, cracks or rips. The spikes are extra sharp with no sign of filing or any gouges. The green and white saddle harness belt looks like it hasn't ever been used and is marked" Niemeyer Corp. Newton Sq. PA. 120 Small. There is a very faint mark beside it that reads"Apr 1988. The leather is in great shape with no cracks. Rips, or tears and everything looks like new. The leather belt in the last picture has the canvas belt that ... moregoes around the tree. The canvas belt has no marks on it. But the leather is marked"Belt. LC-23-E Size:20 R.H. Burke Co. 01-H-1771-63 B-259" It appears to be in bad condition at first glance. But after looking at it closer, it looks like it hasn't ever been worn because there are no marks or stress cracks in the belt where a buckle would have been bearing down on the leather. It just looks like it has been in storage or in someone's closet for a long time. But the leather could be cleaned up and would be in great shape. There are no holes, tears, or rips anywhere in the leather or canvas. I have no idea if it is safe to climb with these or not. I put them on one time and went outside to climb a tree. these are the highest end gaffs i have ever seen. they are plastic and fully adjustable and very comfortable. i was asked to try them out for a friend who sells these. i am and have been a professional arborist for 15 years. they had a full foot rest on them that made them ideal for pole work or standing in a tree for long periods. we cut the front and back off the foot bed to make them more appropriate for removal type work or pruning. if you have decent boots. 13 years ago. My mother-in-law came to live with us. Recently widowed, she left her house as it was, came to Oregon and said she was never going back home. We told her we would pack her house up, pack EVERYTHING, and bring here for her to sort through at her pleasure. Her house was much like a museum. She was an avid and well known antique dealer and collector in Los Angeles in the mid to later 1900's. We moved over 700 boxes of items from her house. Along with many pieces of furniture. 1 of her pieces has been on the Antique Road Show. I built a 7000 sq. foot building to accommodate all her collections. She never opened a box. She died about 6 years ago. And we have just begun the process of going through the boxes ourselves. It is an arduous process. Some items will go to concession dealers. Some are given away, some things donated, ... moresome are kept and some things are offered here. I used to write a bit of the history at the beginning of each ad. I have decided to write this, and when a bit of provenance fits, I will include this introduction. These items were collected many years ago by a very sweet and knowledgeable lady. They are both older, look to be in good shape, one has longer spikes than the other, the leathers look useable, but some of them have some wear and you may decide you want to replace them. The first belt(green one) is labeled Atlas Safety Equip Co Inc LC-23-C 3-45 20" It is in good shape, the other belt has some gray paint or clay/mud all over it, it is hard to read the nameplate because of the gray crud on it. This is a set of Vintage Melling Forging Company climbing spikes. It includes the spikes or gaffs along with the belt. The leather needs to be conditioned but is still in very good shape for its age. The only flaw is there is one rivet missing on one of the leg spikes. These are pretty much ready to be used or to be hung on the wall. They are a great functional piece of history and were used in the forest locally for climbing and limbing. The leather condition is very poor. Not yet stiff-hard. But is border line. Iron is fine. Conditioner such as Neatsfoot oil might help to make them usable. Perhaps better to use as a pattern and make new straps. Saving the buckles could make it easier. In the lower left of my picture note the small foot strap is missing. In the upper right the long strap with holes has a bad spot right at the ring. Maybe cut and refasten over ring.
