Bee Keeping:Pfund Honey Grader Vintage Agricultural Instruments Steampunk
Rescued from the site of an old Bee Farm in Highland Ca. It was in a shed that has not been opened in over 40 years. Items in the shed are dusty, and dated late 1800's to mid 1950's. I did not deep clean any of the rescues; I dusted off with a clean damp rag and leave restorations to the experts. This is a vintage Honey Grader. It works. Plug is in decent condition. I am not a bee farmer. The information I am offering is based on visual matches acquired from an internet search. I hope I can answer all of your questions Here is some information I gathered off the net re: this scale: Honey quality was first judged with the very old school Pfund Color Grader Honey quality was assessed by color. The lighter the honey. The higher the price. Every honey sample is assigned a value from around 5 to around 90. With 5 being very light(like ... morealfalfa honey) and 90 being very dark(like buckwheat or sunflower) For the lighter honeys you usually are paid a premium. The USDA classifies honey into seven categories of color. These are named as follows: Water white Extra white White Extra light amber Light amber Amber Dark Amber"Of course. There is much more to US-honey grading than color. Awesome Piece of Beekeepers history! This vintage smoker is all there: it was found hanging in a beekeeper's shed. The owner probably hung it there in the early 1900's after use and expected to use it again! The twine he used is still attached and the contents are still within. The leather is all there. Although it has separated from the back piece. The spring inside is also still attached to the back. It is an old piece which has one dent in the side where it was obviously bumped on something hard and. Of course lots of dust. The piece of wood that makes up the back is labeled A I Root Company, Medina, Ohio Bee Keeper Supplies. Vintage Honey Bee Hive Smoker and screen Hood, Works
This old bee hive smoker and hood are just as I found them in the basement. My dad used them years ago. There is still some"nut shells" in the smoker. As he would drop them in when he ate nuts, guess it helped to make smoke. The baffel still produces a"puff" when it is squeezed.It is unmarked with the exception of 1951 stamped on the wood. The hood is made of screen and cloth and is good with the exception of a small hole in the fabric, as I have shown in the pictures. I took a lot of pictures so you could look it over.

Here is vintage bee keeping equipment. The hat has a lions international sticker on the front and band inside to keep tight to your head is broken. The hat is made of some type of resin material- lightweight. The netting which goes over the hat has holes and snags in material. The part you look thru is more rigid material with larger netting in excellent condition. The string/ rope on the top( over top of hat) seam in netting is way to long- there is no string for the lower section. There is a red piece of something- it might have been some type of elastic closure for the bottom- would make sense to me! The gloves have L for large and string proof gloves stamped on them. The ends are ragged and had elastic at one time. The gloves are stained and one hole in seam of cloth. I am selling as found- have not attempted to mend or clean any of these ... moreitems. Vintage Live Bee Double Carrier - Wood & Wire - 1968
This wood and wire double carrier was used to transport live bees from Apiary location to the beekeeper. These were shipped from Wayneville. AL to Minnesota. I remember this as a child when the bees arrived- there were hundreds of them in the carrier and they were buzzing. Would then be taken to hives and let loose into the hives. Was a tricky operation. This carrier has the original shipping label on the top. It is dated 1968. Is fading, but still mostly readable. The top plugs are missing. All wire is secure. Has rough cut wood. There is a piece missing from the outside edge on the bottom. There is some staining and dustiness from sitting over the years. Measures 11" wide, 12 1/2" deep, and is 9" tall. My husband is a beekeeper and says that this is one of the very best ones and older because it has the asbestos protective wall. They don't make these any more with the asbestos on them.
