Vintage Hewlett Packard HP 334a Distortion Analyzer parts repair project
Hewlett Packard 334a Distortion analyzer. Has optional DC supply inputs. Comes with mounting ears. Retired from a radio station and has been in storage for several years. Unknown calibration state. I don't have the necessary RF test gear to really check this for operation. So all I've done is plug it in, turn it on and verify that it doesn't blow fuses. Unit is being sold AS IS for repair. The inside is very clean however, so it shouldn't be too difficult a job to get it up to spec. I do note that the slip pin connectors are very tarnished, so I'd start there first. Outside is typical of a unit that saw commercial use, i.e. lots of scratches and the edges. Mild corrosion on the aluminum bits. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Tests performed on the system: Most of the tests stated in the Simplified Operation start up on page 3-8 of the manual were performed. 1) powers up and runs any installed self-tests. 2) Compared internal frequency counter to HP 33120A Waveform generator and HP 53132A universal counter. The HP 8903 seemed to match the valves from the waveform generator and counter. 3) Set the 8903 internal generator ... moreto 500 Hz at 3V; measured 500.26Hz and 2.987on the internal counter/voltmeter. Measured 500.26 V on the external counter. 4) Ran a sweep of 100Hz to 20 KHz. Worked. 5) Qualitatively tested the C-Message and CCITT filters on a sweep of 100 Hz to 20KHz. And they have not been modified. From my own bench. Here's a very nice, working, tested HP 334A. I used it for audio testing, and verified that it is in spec at 100Hz, 1K, 10K, and 30KHz. It is utterly reliable. The automatic null function works great, and once it locks on it just doesn't budge; rock steady. The voltmeter has likewise been tested and verified accurate, using a Fluke meter for comparison. In day to day use, I have not found it to have any operational issues. Cosmetically. This one is very nice. The front face is nearly free of scratches and dings, and the screen printing is sharp and clear. Hewlett Packard HP HP-333A DISTORTION ANALYZER- NR! Same as 334A except no RF Audio Detector. Needs repair. You are bidding on a used. Somewhat functional HP 333 DISTORTION ANALYZER. The unit functions but has issues. We noted that the unit in manual mode can be used but the automatic null function does not work correctly. We observed that it sometimes attempts to null the signal but does not completely resolve. Please see pictures#6 and#7. These show a 0.146% reading and scope display using the defective auto-null function. We know our Leader LAG-125 can do better than 0.10% Physically. The side trim rails are a bit scratched from handling but are completely intact. This unit is a newer version with the updated front panel connectors. It has the feet and wire stand. The front panel looks quite clean with minimal scratches along the top. ... moreThe general cosmetics, in fact, are very acceptable except for the scratches mentioned earlier. Please see the pictures. We are not the original owner. There are no cracked knobs and the controls have a nice, firm feel. This model is identical to the usually sought after 334A except it does not have the RF Audio Detector function. Do you really need that? In fact. The same owner/service manual is used for both models. We have used 333A and 334A models for many years and can safely say we have never used the RF detector feature on the 334A. Both models otherwise have the same specs and performance. We are offering this unit at a low minimum bid due to our need to reduce inventory. We simply can no longer afford to do detailed troubleshooting and not recover our labor costs. Having said that, we have stated a minimum bid without any reserve actually below our initial investment. Our limited spot check was at 1000Hz. No other tests were done after we saw the poor auto-null performance. Our loss is your gain! This HP 333A is known to have limited functionality and not just merely power up. This does have some wear but cosmetically I would consider it to be in good used condition. This did not power up when I plugged it in. I am not an expert on these so I am not sure what is wrong.
