This unit records on ¼” wide magnetic tape usually contained on standard 7” diameter reels. I believe the instrumentation amplifiers allow for a bandwidth of DC to greater than 60KHz. At least as far as I can understand it. I acquired a user's manual from Nagra, and was able to undo some of the switching modifications made by the previous owner, a recording studio. Before I did that, the machine would park when I put it in record mode. All buttons and swiches are functional. Except for the buttons to the left of and under the record/output window(these buttons are non-functional in the time-code version) I was able to play back a tape that I had. And in normal play mode the time code head was clacking away. In variable speed playback, it didn't do that. The time code head also ran when in record mode. The servo knob works. I couldn't figure ... moreout how to record a tape. It still played back in record mode. Although there are four switches on the logic board for three speeds and four standards. The“modify” button switches back and forth between only two speeds, 7 1/2 and 15 IPS. The upper warning indicators for phase lock and tape tension are on continuously during play mode. Indicating an error that should be checked. The lower, more dire warning flickers on tape tension, but on phase lock it is dark. In variable speed play mode, the upper indicator is on under phase lock(the manual says this is normal) but the upper indicator just flickers a little on tape tension, while the lower one remains dark. The user's manual is like a textbook. And would take months to be proficent. The deck seems to be customizable in endless ways. The heads have some wear on them. Please see the pictures. A cleaning and lube would probably go a long way. Remember: I'm not an expert on any subject. With regard to the equipment I sell. I am a full-time amateur and part-time idiot. My descriptions are simply accounts of my findings and observations while fumbling around with whatever contraption happens to come my way. They are not

This machine is in beautiful physical condition. And works as far as I was able to test it, although I don't have a degree in Nagra, so there are a lot of things I don't know how to test. The battery has been recelled and charges well. I will include a PDF of the manual, but I don't have the optional software for controlling the unit from a PC. There is no tape included in the sale. Here are my observations: The machine powers up nicely, Pressing play made it jump into action. And pressing stop made it stop, Pressing exe and goto zero made it rewind to the zero setting. Or close to it, Pressing play and rec began ... morerecording; the microphone I have uses 12V phantom. And switching to 12V ph powered the mic, I recorded in channels 1 and 2. And played them back through headphones, The tape was dead silent between recordings, Headtime is 1296.7 hours, The concept of the NAGRA-D was to build a truly professional machine based on a format that is reliable and lends itself well to archiving. The arguments regarding the format. Choice of tape etc. are not covered here. The NAGRA-D is a four channel digital audio recorder having 24 bits per sample recording on 6.35mm metal oxide tape. It accommodates the sampling frequencies of 32 kHz. 44.1 kHz and 48 kHz(with the on-board A/D converters) rendering it suitable for all types of professional recording applications. The NAGRA-D is transparent to the AES bus giving connection possibilities to a wide range of external digital equipment, which even give it the possibility of recording two channels at sampling frequencies of 64, 88.2 and 96 kHz using external A/D converters.
