What the hell is that? ... moreSeems like a shaker to me. But what do I know? VWR catalog#58816-115. Manufactured by Henry Troemner, Inc. according to the label on the back. Serial number 2895 if that tells you anything. When I first inspected this the physical condition was so good that I assumed it to be new as in never used. But that was based on the assumption that the foam pieces sandwiched between the steel shaker hold downs were packing material. Once I picked it up and did a little research I figured out the middle foam block is actually there to hold multiple pipettes I guess. And the top and bottom black foam are supposed to be there to cushion the pipettes(or whatever) during the shakedown. So no doubt it has been used. But usually when you see used shakers they show evidence of having lost their load so to speak at some point. Typically there is some residual ooze or evidence thereof left to tell the tale. This one in comparison is pristine. I wiped a bit of dust off of it. Pretty typical for surplus stuff, but other than that it pretty much looks like it did when it came out of the box. I initially tried it using the timer. And for a moment I didn’t think the timer worked just because I would have expected the timer switch to count down to zero and instead it remained motionless. I guess that is so you could duplicate the shake time for the next batch. But the shaking ceased at consistent intervals although the numbers don’t seem to mean anything. I would have assumed them to indicate minutes or seconds or something. But 1 was only a couple of seconds. 3 about 12 seconds. I didn’t put a stop watch to it just counted it down. And again, it seemed consistent if not particularly logical other than the higher the number the longer the shake. So having gotten past the illogic of the timer I was ready to declare it working when I flipped the switch to RUN instead of TIMER… and absolutel

Two labeled"286" and one(with fewer but larger holes) labelled"250" see the photos) These blocks also feature a smaller hole which might be designed to take a detachable lifting handle, as is the case with the Fisher Scientific block heater we are also selling on ebay; we do not have such an accessory for this VWR unit, but as the tops of the blocks project above the top surface of the main unit it is not difficult to remove them without tools(other than gloves or some other kind of heat protection for your hands) This unit can hold 2 of these 3 heat blocks at a time. Our guess is that for most efficient operation you would want to have 2 heat blocks installed when using this even if only needing the capacity provided by 1, to eliminate ... morethe exposed surface area of the heating chamber and the single block if you used only 1. Good working condition. The front touch controls work. To create a"set point" for the heater to heat the blocks to and then maintain that temperature. Test procedure: 1) Install 2 heat blocks. 2) Observe heat increasing very gradually toward the existing"set point" of 37 degrees Celsius. The closer it got to that set point. The more gradual the temperature increase became, which makes sense because you would not want to overheat a sample and only then drop back down to the intended level. 3) The unit eventually settled on a range between 36.9 and 37.2 degrees Celsius. 4) We did not keep this under constant observation but assume that is the approximate variation above and below the set point. See photo of bottom of this unit. Lab equipment in our experience is sometimes rusty or stained on the bottom. Showing it was not well taken care of and/or people were careless about cleaning it in the event of a spill.
