This model was manufactured from 1931 to 1941 with a 2 1/3: 1 gear ... moreratio. The side plates are made of Bakelite and the single counter balanced crank came with a wood handle painted in black enamel. This particular reel has lost some of the plating on the spool. Crank and foot and has a chip in the side plate which can be seen in the forth photo. The crank and spool turn freely and the clicker is strong and load. The mechanism which turns the clicker on and off works well. The reel foot has NO signs of being altered in any way. In terms of appearance this Golden West No. 1878. Does have the typical grime and tarnish you would expect from a 7 0+ years old reel. Overall I would say the reel is in good condition given its age and should clean up to make a fine addition to any vintage reel collection.
