vintage Wright and McGill "Granger Victory" Split-Bamboo Fly Rod, 4 pieces, tube
Exact item shown. This is a bamboo fly rod that assembles in 3 pieces. There are two of the thin end pieces. I weighed the three pieces that make a complete rod(handle piece. Middle piece, end piece) on my postal scale, it weighs 5.2 ounces. Each piece is 35 inches long. Near the handle there are two rubber stamps on the rod, one says"Granger Victory" the other says"Wright& McGill" The metal reel holder part of the handle says"Made by Wright& McGill Rod Co Denver Colo USA" it also has two patent dates- Pat Apr 12 1938" and"Pat No 2114107. The aluminum tube says"CHAMIPON" MFD by CAL-AIR Products Los Angles" Inside the screw on cover there is stamped" CAL-AIR Products Co Los Angles" This rod is from the estate of a relative who died a long time ago. It has sat unused for ... moredecades. I don't know anything about fly fishing. I have tried to describe the rod carefully, I see no damage, no wear, no stains, etc. There is some oxidation on the silver metal, not rust, and there is some darkening of the cork handle from holding it, othewise to me it looks absolutely like new. VTG WRIGHT & McGILL GRANGER 8642 Bamboo Fly Rod 8 1/2' STREAM & LAKE
The Granger 8642's have got to be the most iconic western taper bamboo fly rod in history. I like them because they are very versatile and can cast in all situations including when the winds pick up and will fish a 5 or a 6. My story this past summer included my first outing with an 8642 Special and was 3 days on the B_r River in Montana. We fished the upper head waters for up to 16" Cutts and the Special was a ball. Then we fished lower. Larger waters for nice sized, hard fightin' bows. I could not believe that I was making 60' casts with a hopper in the wind. Later in the day I switched over to a nymph rig and was amazed at how well it could mend the line. I even fished streamers with the fear of nicking the rod but it performed flawlessly. Now I don't know about you, but that is the type of waters that I normally fish, ... moremuch more than the dainty little creeks. I am having a hard time fishing with graphite again! This rod is very nice. But has a couple of minor issues. One guide on the mid has been re-wrapped with the correct scarlet red. It was done nicely and other than it looking slightly newer than the rest of the wraps, you can hardly tell. One tip had a splinter on the top 6" and has been wrapped in clear. It is even hard to tell in the pics and should fish like the other tip, which is excellent. The finish on the rod is near flawless and shines like new. The pics show the condition of the grip and seat. Ferrules have a nice fit. Sock is original but the tube is a few inches longer than the rod. This is a very sought after fly rod because of the 7 foot size and high quality make. I found in a garage sale and never fished with it. Has 2 tips. Sock and aluminum case with cap. On Dec-06-12 at 16:01:21 PST. Seller added the following information: Additional information about condiction: The varnish is perfectly smooth with no blemishes or checks. The wraps. Guides and ferrules are all solid and tight. I can see no noticeable sets. The rod sock shows no signs of use either. It is clean with no water spots, mildew or dirt stains. I believe this rod was used very little throughout its life. I purchased the rod at a garage sale from a man that found it in the back of a cabin closet 20 years earlier during some ... moreconstruction. It was given to him, and he said he might have used it a few times. The wraps have minor unravelling on two of the guides as seen in the pictures. The cork is in very good condition with the exception of a small section being trimmed above the reel seat as seen in the last picture. This was probably done to accomodate a larger reel. This is a Wright& McGill Victory Reel. It is used but in great condition and ready to use. It is spooled with fairly new P-Line 17lb Florocoat Moss Green line. The reel comes with the original box. Diagram and neopreme cover. This has been an excellent reel that has landed it's share of 4& 5 pound fish. I have upgraded and no longer use it. It's the high speed model at 7.0:1 ratio. It states that the" Wright& McGill Deluxe casting rod was made from Tonkin cane. I see this rod and it is different. It could be the Tonkin cane or it could be some type of fiberglass? It is brown with brown thread wrap(top 6 ferrules only) The seventh(7) ferrule near the center has cream under wrap and brown thread wrap. The same on the handle end. This rod is in great condition. For auction are two Skeet Reese casting rods. I will describe them as close as I can. Pics are not as good as I wanted. Rod 1- WMESRT72C1- 7'2" in length. Lure weight of 1/8-1/2, Fast Action, Senko/Toad rod. Rod is in good condition with normal boat wear. Eyelets are solid and rod has plenty of backbone to hook and hold fish. Rod 2- WMESRJW72C1- 7'2" length. 1/4-1 lure weight, fast action, Jig/worm rod. This rod is missing the 2nd eyelet from the top and also the ceramic inside eyelet out of the tip. This is a Eagle Claw"Trailmaster" fly rod/ spinning rod combination. Put out by the Wright Mcgill CO. Denver Colorado. This is a six piece rod, when all together it measures 6' 9" 206cm) The rod looks like it was used very little, it has a couple tiny nicks on the metal of the base portion of the rod, the handle. There is a soft cloth pouch with a partition for the different pieces. And a nice aluminum case with a water tight screw on cap. The aluminum case measures 15" end to end and is 2 3/4" in diameter. This is a nice set and as the name implies it would be great for packing in, it can be attached to a back pack or with a thong around your shoulder, the thong, or string is missing, but easily replaced. This rod is missing the 4th guide from the bottom. I believe that this rod was used. As there are quite a few scratches on the blank. None of the scratches are deep, they do not affect the fishability of the rod. The yellow grip on the butt end is dirty. Rod#4: Heavy Cover Model: WMESRMPS76C1 7'6" 3/8-1 1/2 oz. 12-30 lb. Fast Action. This rod is missing the 3rd guide from the bottom. This rod appears to have been used heavily. It has many scratches on the blank and the finish is flaking in a few small spots. The tip is also missing and the blank is burned right below the tip. It looks like someone tried to remove the tip to replace it and burned the blank. The burnt area is about 1" long. For Sale: I have a Wright& McGill Skeet Reese Jig/Worm Casting Rod. it was used for one season(Id say 5-10 times) The rod is in great shape. A little dirty from being used, as you can see there is some black on the rod. I have no idea what caused it or if you can scrub it off(it cannot be felt with the finger) I have no problem with the rod, I just got about 5 new rods around Christmas so its time to move some. I have the shipping set as a calculated cost within the US. I have it this way because I am not trying to make any money on the shipping. The package weighs 7 pounds and is 96" long. Wright& McGill Fly Fishing Backpack Up for auction is a used Wright& McGill Fishing Backpack with removable chest pouches. This pack has pockets for days. The pack is made out of heavy duty nylon and has worn well over the years. Most of the pack looks new. I do see some dirt marks here and there but other than that every component looks and works as it should. The backpack portion is large and roomy with ample room for jackets. Lunch and any other personal items. The removable chest pouches are very well thought out. The main compartment of each pouch will fit at least one fly box and is closed with a zipper. On the front you have another smaller pocket that will hold a smaller fly box. The really cool part about the pouch is the fact that you can put tippet spool in a pocket and string it through a small hole. Reel seat mechanism works well however does have some minor cosmetic blemishes and marks. Take note that all 4 sections are correct and equal length. NO signs of any damage to cane. Great varnish. This rod has been used but is in very nice condition showing some flaws ... morein the original varnish finish, it appears sometime in it's past it has been professionally resealed to protect the cane. Beautiful tight wraps which also appear to be original- some are showing colour change due to age. ALL original witness marked ferrules fit smooth and effortless. For sale at a buy it now fixed price is this great fiberglass rod from Wright McGill Eagle Claw. It is the Pro Worm Model MPWS 6 1/2 spin fishing rod and it is a 6 1/2 foot two piece rod. It is a heavy duty rod. Good for 25 or 30 pound line(likely you could use heavier than that without damage) It is most appropriately used for catfish these days. It has an uplocking seat and carbide guides. It is made in the USA. We have no tube or rod sack for this rod. This rod is used and has some rub marks on it as well as a little picking out of the cork handle but overall it is cosmetically good and immediately usable. It assembles to the correct length so it has not been broken and repaired. We do ship worldwide but international shipping can be expensive and the length of this rod is ok for some countries.
