It was made to last, having a metal base and metal cover. Uses a key-wound spring to power the alarm. It's strictly mechanical and requires no batteries. Back in the day these disks would pop off the front after reaching a desired temperature(136 degrees) and the alarm bell which had been wound from the back would begin it's loud tolling of the bell. These are untested. And being sold as novelty items and not for a household fire detection system. They don't detect smoke.
