These reels where built and marketed by Gladding during the time they owned the Payne rod company. This reel comes with the 3 additional spools as shown in the photos. These are very smooth reels and are very similar to Hardy's St. George Reels. Usually these reels are found with only one additional spool. I have removed the white line from its spool. Vintage Plueger Medalist fly reel w/2 extra spools
This is a used Pflueger Medalist 1495 reel with 2 extra spools. Real functions well but has paint ware from normal use. Each spool has backing on it and has had a 1/4" stainless steel nut epoxied opposite the crank handle for better balance and less spool wobble on long/fast fish runs. Reel is set for right hand retrieve but can easily be set back to left hand as original if so desired. 1/4" stainless nuts could also be removed easily if desired. The is a"made in America" reel and spools not the more recent imported model. Reel and spools were purchased originally in the early 70's.

Vintage Pflueger Medalist No 1494 Fly Fishing Reel w/ 2 Extra Spools Pre-Shakespeare model Manufactured between 1959 and 1965 This is truly a vintage find and represents the culmination of the development of the Medalist reel series between 1938 and 1966(when the company was acquired by Shakespeare) The last pre-Shakespeare version of the Medalist 1494 is distinguished by a"Made in Akron O USA" stamp(see photo) Indicating it was made between 1959 and 1965, when Pflueger added the reversible drag ratchet plate. If you are interested in the history of the Medalist series, more information can be found at. This particular set consists of one complete reel. Plus two extra spools. Mechanically this reel is sound and provides a lot of flexibility with the added spools. As indicated in the pictures, the outer cover plate has some bubbling ... morenear the adjustable drag and the foot. The drag mechanism seems to work very well and the reel’s action is smooth. The spools are all in good condition, although two of them have light engraving that says“DUNTON PACK” referring to the spit bamboo flyrod that was paired with this reel setup. Classic Pflueger 1498 Fly Reel, 3 extra Spools and lines
This is one of the first fly reels made in the USA that riveled European reels. I've owned this. And other Medalists I will list, from new, starting flyfishing as a kid. The reels are in good shape. The click works and the drag is moderately adjustable. They were never great drags, but it's sufficient to control any thing you'll catch. The reel works fine with any line from a 7 wt to a 9 wt. I've taken bass, pike and trout on it, and always cared for my reels. Each spool is loaded with backing and fly lines. The 2 green ones are Cortland 333 WF lines, a 7 wt. and(I think) a 9 wt(An $80- $90 value, new) They are both in pretty good condition, and definitely fishable. The others are a sinking line and an older Cortland 333 of unknown wts. The reel and spools show typical wear, with some scratches and rubs on the surface, but ... morethe reel is in good working order. A great bargain for this classic reel. Pflueger 1498 Fly Reel with 2 Extra Spools LHW
Wonderful Pflueger 1498 DA in Good Condition. It will hold up a Weight Forward 10 Wt. Line and 200 yards of 20 Dacron backing. I can't imagine how much Gel Spun backing it would hold. It comes with two extra spools so you will be ready for any conditions on the water. The reel is set up for Left Hand Retrieve. Its heavier than modern reels but balances out better than modern reels on the big sticks and two handed rods fisherman are using for steelhead and salt water fish. Weight becomes a non factor when the outfit is balanced properly. I will probably regret letting this faithful old fly fishing partner go. It never had a foul-up on the water and its landed some rather large fish from Albies and Stripers to Pike and Steelhead. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
