Two antique Fly Fishing Reels. Meisselbach Expert& Union Hardware 7115S One reel is a Meisselbach Expert. Estimate it was manufactured before 1905. Only markings on the reel are EXPERT on the top bridge. Following the history of the Meisselbach Expert reel it appears to be Nickle plated brass. Reel is in rough shape. Not sure if complete or not. Reel needs a good cleaning and inspection to free up and see if restorable. Good wall hanger. Maybe parts reel. Second reel is a Union Hardware fly reel. Reel was manufactured in Torrington Connecticut. Reel has markings on backside but very difficult to read. Reel has not been cleaned or polished. Last digits of model number are.115S. Difficult to read due to the patina of the steel construction. Reel looks to be fully functional. Reel looks to be complete. Can't figure out if there is any ... morekind of drag adjustment. Ohio in the later part of the 1890s or in the early part of the 1900s. It has Pat. Jan. 14. 96 stamped on the housing. Mechanically it is in very good to excellent condition. Cosmetically it shows its age with some oxidation and pitting but nothing bad. It has maintained its shiny exterior well. You don’t see many of these beautiful. Fishing Up for consideration is an Antique Meisslebach first version automatic fly reel made in Newark NJ between 1911 and 1918. The reel is marked Pat. June 30. 1914. Mechanically the reel functions very well for it's age but is a little stiff and could probably use some lube. Cosmetically the reel is in excellent condition with a nice German silver finish with the proper level of petina. The only cosmetic concerns include some minor scratches on the crank and on the back side of the reel. Despite the cosmetic concerns, this is a great, scarce reel that will make a great addition to a vintage tackle collection. Meisselbach automatic reels were not as innovative at many of their other reels. The first model(1911) did have some patentable features. And was typical of previous Meisselbach reels: It was stout and dependable. Antique First Edition A. F. Meisselbach 1888 "EXPERT" Nickel Plated Fly Reel
You are bidding on one"EXPERT" fly reel. The spool measures 3" diameter. The body measures 3 1/2" diameter. The depth is approximately 2" including the handle. The foot is approx 2-1/4" long. In the top of the body is inscribed in"EXPERT" On the face of the spool is inscribed"PAT'D. FEB 23-86, NOV 23-86, FEB 5-89" The body and spool are nickel plated brass. The plating is in excellent condition. The handle is wood and is in excellent condition. There is a copy of this reel in worse condition than this one on display at an angling museum. Researching the web I found the following information: The Expert reel was the second reel produced by A. F. Meisselbach& Bro. It was a vertically aligned reel that the Meisselbach's envisioned as a fly reel. Trolling reel, or casting reel. The ... morefirst version of the Expert(1888-1895) had a notation that these reels had a bullet shaped knob and this version of the Expert is scarce in both sizes. Later editions had"expert" in an italic font rather than block font. A. F. Meisselbach. The son of German immigrants, designed his first fishing reel in 1885. At the tender age of 20 he received a patent on this reel and then convinced A.G. Spalding& Bros. to sell the reel for him. This reel was a simple single action reel, that we call the Amateur. Demand was brisk, and"Gus" soon convinced his brother, William, to go into the business with him and their Newark, NJ garage was soon humming with machine work. In 1888 they expanded their line rapidly and moved into a larger machine shop. That year they added the Expert Reel, the Universal Rod Holder and their famous line of Spring Bow nets. A.F. Meisselbach& Bro. Newark. NJ August Frederich Meisselbach's first reels were simple. Useful reels. He received the patent for his first reel on February 23, 1886. Antique Meisselbach Amateur fly fishing reel with thumb brake
A well-used vertical Meisselbach Amateur#7 with the thumb drag. Made from the late 1880s up until about 1919. As you can see, this reel has seen quite a bit of use, with some finish loss. I think the knob might be original, but it's attached with a rivet instead of a screw. This is a somewhat tough reel to find for Meisselbach collectors. Winner pays within 3 days with PayPal. Up for your consideration is this Nice Antique. Original Early J. C. HIGGINS. No. 319 Featherlight Fly Fishing Reel similar to Meisselbach brand. It appears to be brass or bronze but not sure. Reel is straight and works great. The clicker lock slide button works fine and clicks sharp and nice. The reel has your normal 65 plus years of gentle wear. Wear marks include wearing of the brass/bronze, scratches, pearl looking reel knob shows a little wear. The pearl looking knob how ever is not cracked and turns freely. Attaching flange is still nice and tight, very secure. Please study the photos and judge for yourself. This is a very NICE ANTIQUE J.C. Here is an original August F. Meisselbach"EXPERT" REELwith patent dates Patd Feb23-86. Feb5-89, Nov3-91. Setting on its mount, measures 3 1/4 inches tall. Made of nickel plated brass shows use, work fine. At some time some-one wanted to contour one of the base feet to fit the pole mount ring better. Meisselbach Featherlight 280 raised pillar skeleton fly reel. According to Phil White's definitive Meisselbach Collector's Guide. The Featherlight 280 model was made between 1898-1919, and since this reel is not marked with the Meisselbach name we know it was made prior to 1906. It is stamped with the Jan 14, 1896 patent pertaining to construction of the Featherlight reels. please enlarge the photos. Spins smoothly. The click works fine. Antique Meisselbach Raised Pillar Fly Reel, Featherlight Mod. #280, early 1900's
You are bidding on an antique Meisselbach raised pillar skeleton fly reel. Featherlight Model 280, patented in 1896. It came from the estate of a family friend. The Featherlight 280 was manufactured from 1898 to 1919. I understand that Meisselbach did not put their mark on reels prior to 1906. So this marked reel likely dates from 1906 to 1919. Please Note: Photos are an integral part of item description. I know nothing about fishing gear and relied on a friend who does to help with descriptions and condition. Jan. 14 96 On head plate: Featherlight On foot ... moreplate: No. 280 Description: This fly reel operates manually and has a ratchet mechanism. Raised pillar. Raised star skeleton style. Meisselbach made this reel in nickel and bronze and this one appears to be bronze. Condition: Reel appears to be in very good condition and seems to be fully functional- turns smoothly. S pool moves freely. There is some age-appropriate paint wear. But no corrosion. I'm not an expert and didn't want to clean the reel and risk damaging value by possibly using improper materials. Will leave that task to the buyer. It's time to downsize my possessions and pass on things I don't need to someone who will use and appreciate them. Please carefully review all ad text.
