Lot of 3 Vintage Skeleton Fly Reels, Pflueger Progress, Skilton's, Armax
This auction is for a lot of 3 early. Raised pillar, skeleton fly reels from the early 1900's. These is part of a lot of fly fishing gear that I inherited from my father, a life-long fisherman. My father inherited a number of old fishing items as a young man in the late 1950's or early 1960's and he never threw anything fishing-related away. All 3 of these reels are fully functional, have no play in the rivets and I'm quite confident that they could be fished with if one were inclined to do so. Either way, they would be a great addition to a collection of antique fly-fishing gear. My father had a display case hanging on the wall of his"fishing room" and these reels were part of the display. First up is a Pflueger Progress reel. It appears to be made of brass with a chromed spool and black wood handle. The reel body ... moreappears to have been colored either black or brown. Some of this color has been worn away-see photos. The spool is 2.125" in diameter. It is marked on the top of the seat. PFLUEGER TRADE(some sort of symbol I can't make out) MARK PROGRESS MADE IN U.S.A. And the number"60" underneath the seat. It works great, has a nice clicking sound and spins freely when the ratcheting mechanism is disengaged. There is no line on this reel. Next up is a Skilton's reel. It also appears to be made of brass that had once been black. There is little evidence of the black color except around the counter weight and on the upper part of the reel seat. It has a black wooden handle. The only markings are on the back of the body. SKILTON'S FISHING TACKLE. T.S. Skilton& Sons Fishing Tackle was a well-known supplier of fly-fishing gear in Connecticut starting in 1895. The spool is 2.25" in diameter and is wound with line and a green colored backing. PFLUEGER NO. 60 TWO for one bid- Vintage Pflueger Progress. Raised pillar, skeleton fly reels are relisted here. Spools spin freely, like a top. Clicker works. All metal is very clean. Frame is solid brass. I think that spool is polished nickel plate. Both rubberoid handles are beautiful, as shown. 60" is stamped into bottom of feet. Pflueger, Bulldog trade mark, and PROGRESS, are stamped on top of the feet. NO RESERVE above opening. The line is very old and stiff. Probably has been there since Hitler was a corporal. Overall. Skeleton frame fly reel with a squared off foot and flattened spool screw, like the foot and spool screw on a round frame Progress reel. I have a round frame 1774 Progress in my collection in a box dated 6/39, and two other square foot skeleton Progress reels in boxes dated 1/40. It seems obvious that Enterprise was using up it's old stock parts by fitting the old skeleton fly reel frames with the new, square feet from the round frame Progress reels. This example has a gunmetal frame and nickel plated spool and is stamped on the foot as a 60 yard reel. Shows light finish wear. Spins like a top and the click is strong in both directions. I think the amber knobbed Progress reels were made in the early 30's as I have seen a couple in boxes dated 1931. Nice old Pflueger Progress 60 Skeleton Fly Reel. Looks great works great! Super smooth spinner. Straight spool(no rubs) strong click, pillared spool, knob spins freely, 60 yard size, bulldog stamp on foot, I am not about to polish it. I wiped it down with a rag and Windex. Some people don't like it and I am not sure it gets any more money for it cleaned up. The old fishing line is still on the reel is crusty and rotten. Again I wipe them down and take pictures. I don't make anything if I spend hours and hours to polish something that you are probably going to clean up again when you get it. I will combine shipping for multiple items. Vintage Pflueger Progress skeleton 80 yard fly reel
Up for bid is a vintage fly reel an early Pflueger Progress skeleton Trout Fly reel. Reel made in USA in the 1930’s? This is the 80 yard reel.The reel face is 2-1/2" in diameter and will hold most any light trout weight line. It’s a small antique reel and is quite rare in this configuration, good condition and it would look great on a bamboo fly rod. Reel is missing its handle material and the reel itself needs to be cleaned up. Has a light click. The reel is in good used condition and works properly. Please refer to the photos before bidding.
