Hermaphrodite calipers are used to scribe lines parallel to the workpiece edge, locating and testing centers, and other layout work. Calipers measure the distance between two opposing sides of an object. They make inside. Outside, depth, or step measurements, according to their type. Calipers are commonly used in architecture, metalworking, mechanical engineering, machining, manufacturing, carpentry, and medicine. The simplest calipers have two legs to mark the two points and require a ruler to take the measurement. More complex calipers use two sets of jaws instead of legs and have up to two graduated scales. Vernier, dial, and digital calipers give direct and accurate readings and are functionally identical, having a calibrated scale with a fixed jaw, and another jaw with a movable pointer that slides along the scale. The vernier caliper has a scale sliding parallel to the main scale for an additional, fractional reading to improve measurement precision. The dial caliper has a circular dial with a pointer on a toothed gear rack replacing the second vernier scale. As with the vernier, this second measurement is added to the reading from the main scale to obtain the result. The dial caliper is used also for measuring size differential between two objects. The digital caliper takes the same sort of differential measurements as the dial caliper by zeroing the display at any point along the slide, with an LCD(replacing the dial) that displays a single, easily read value in both English and metric units. Up for auction is this( Firm Joint Inside Caliper) in the 12 inch size. No 27-12) I bought this caliper in the 1960's& used it one time. This inside caliper is almost new with a few rust spots from laying around. It does have a couple initials scratched on one surface. The firm joint tension can be set to what-ever tension you would like. Legs are made of high grade steel. After proper adjustment has been made. The tension will not change with the opening& closing of the legs. The length of the legs is 12 inches& will measure about one-third greater than the given size of the legs. For example. Vintage Machinist Lot of 2 Hermaphrodite Firm Joint Calipers Starrett & Lufkin
You are bidding on a lot of 2 Hermaphrodite stiff leg calipers. The smaller of the 2 is a Starrett no. 243 with an overall length of 7.5" when fully opened. The larger is a Lufkin and it measures 11.5" when fully opened. The Lufkin has the anchor point and the anchor point holder but is missing the nut/cap to tighten that to the body of the caliper. Both have some light surface rust. These were from my Grandfathers collection. He worked for Lockheed Missile& Space Division back in the early 60's and these tools have been sitting unused since sometime in the 70's. After he passed away they were given to me which I have held onto now for several years. There are many quality tools and I feel that they would be better put to use than to collect more dust here. Set of 4 Vintage Starrett Outside Firm Joint Calipers 4, 5, 6, and 8 inch ???
I inherited alot of vintage machinist tools when my Great Grandfather past away. I have no use for them so I am listing them as I go through them. Here is a set of 4 L.S. Starrett Outside diameter calipers. The Starrett name is only on 2 of them but they all appear the same. My great grandfathers initials are stamped in them as well(CJK) In good used shape considering their age. As always all items are sold as-is and I will only ship to the lower 48 states.
