Hermaphrodite calipers are used to scribe lines parallel to the workpiece edge, locating and testing centers, and other layout work. Calipers measure the distance between two opposing sides of an object. They make inside. Outside, depth, or step measurements, according to their type. Calipers are commonly used in architecture, metalworking, mechanical engineering, machining, manufacturing, carpentry, and medicine. This is a vintage(Ca 1940s) Brown& Sharpe No. 835 6” firm-joint hermaphrodite calipers with adjustable point. They have the name of a previous owner lightly etched on the frame.
