There are no cracks in the dial. The measuring surfaces are in great condition. This slides very smoothly for about 3 inches. Then it is a little stiff up to 6 inches. The wooden box is in poor condition. It is dirty& warped some, and the hinges& clasp are rusty.

Caliper and Case in perfect working accurate condition. There are some very light scratches but nothing to inhibit the smooth action of the caliper. A light etching has been marked on the back of the caliper but is very light and not at all deep, you can not feel it when the caliper head slides over it, please see pictures below. Up for grabs is a Brown and Sharpe 12" dial caliper. Model 599-579-12-1. This is the better quality Swiss made, not the cheaply made calipers. The caliper is in good condition and is working as it should. I just recently had it checked by a commercial calibration laboratory and it meets the manufacturers specifications. This tool is in pristine condition. It does not appear to have ever been used. Calipers are in flawless condition and are complete with their original case and manufacturer's insert. No scratches. Ownership marks or rust. The crystal is scratch free and the dial face is spotless. The case is scuffed and tarnished from years on the shelf, but the tool works as it should- smooth and precise.
