This interesting piece of test equipment was purchased by me at the Waynesville. NC, hamfest in western North Carolina. The seller had a lot of test equipment from the Hammarlund radio factory in Mars Hill, NC and I was told it was used to test the audio output of Hammarlund receivers. This a professionally made piece with an engraved panel and high quality components and wiring. The load resistors are made by Ward Leonard and are non-inductive and appear to be able to handle quite a bit of power. I have used it to test some 100 watt output guitar and audio amps and these resistors don't ever get warm. I'd be willing to be they will handle any power amp you might come across. Front panel switches select between 4. 8 and 16 ohm loads with binding posts for connection to an AC voltmeter or wattmeter. I have never seen another one like ... moreit and perhaps it was custom made in the Hammarlund plant. I am no longer working on audio equipment and need to start downsizing my workshop. Shortwave SWL Receiver Antenna Dummy Load for correct receiver alignment
Auction is for RMA Dummy Antenna unit. The units BNC connector connects to your signal generator and the alligator clips connect to the receivers antenna terminal and ground. A Radio Manufacturers Association(RMA) dummy antenna is a necessary part of an electronics workbench bench used to properly and accurately align vintage radio receivers. Why can't I connect my signal generator directly to the receiver? Do I really need to use the RMA dummy antenna? For receivers that have been designed for an external antenna such as those with an antenna and ground connection and do not use an internal loop antenna. An RMA dummy antenna is desirable so that the impedance connected at the input circuit of the receiver will be approximately that which would appear there when an average external antenna is used. Most signal generators have a very low ... moreoutput impedance, often in the neighborhood of just a few ohms. If the signal generator leads are connected directly to the antenna terminals of the receiver, an inordinately low impedance would now be connected to the terminals, thus shunting the antenna circuit of the receiver. More importantly though, especially for the alignment procedure, the presence of this low impedance changes the resonant frequency of the input circuit. A circuit that has been aligned under this condition would be out of alignment when a normal external antenna is connected. The dummy antenna approximates the normal load and thus provides a standard input impedance at which to realign the receiver.

Up for bids today is a dummy load(Probably a Bird from the looks of its design) but I cannot be 100% sure that it is in fact a BIRD Brand item. There is no data plate on the item to give me any information about it. I have checked it out and it is a 50 ohm load. Its dimensions are 3 inches and 7 1/2 inches long and weighs a hefty 3 lbs. Including the N-Male connector. I am including in the auction a Female-Female adapter so the item can be used with either a Male or Female connector. The item was picked up at a Surplus auction and is in excellent condition. My guess is the load is probably a 100 watt model based on its size. But I cannot be sure.
