The piece still functions as intended. I did a test on blank paper and it seemed to work fine, see photo#12. Cosmetically it is in very nice shape with just a couple of scratches or scrapes here and there but nothing major. All the keys are intact with no chips or cracks. The Paymaster check imprinter machine was commonly used for payroll to imprint the amount to protect against check fraud and check alteration. The Paymaster S-550 is imprinted with ink and embossed. ~ PAYMASTER X- 550 ~ This is a wonderful vintage check stamp machine by PAYMASTER. Built in Chicago IL by The Paymaster Corp. This machine was made to stand up to the tests of time. The original price of the machine is on the metal serial tag and was $134.50. That was a lot of change back when this was released. Machine seems to work like a champ. I am not an expert on these. But the press seems to work well and will leave even clear markings on plain paper. All it appears to need is a good internal cleaning and new ink rollers. I haven't been able to find out what years this model was produced(the patent dates to the early 1930s but I doubt it is that old) The look reminds me of some 1950s equipment I've seen. But that doesn't mean much. Seems to work OK- it embosses/ prints the amount. There is a ribbon in it- dry. But some color is showing up on the impression. Up for sale is a Great Looking Vintage Paymaster X-550 Check Printer Locked& Protected. It comes with its key which is necessary to use the check printer system and lock it when not in use. It also comes with its cover. The Printer is in very good condition with minimal wear or marks. The handle does have some wear on the metal but the rest of the Paymaster looks beautiful. If you look at it carefully using the enlarging system you will be able to see how Great a Condition it is in. There is ink in the unit and the access to it it is in the front. I took a picture of the seven columns set at all 9's and the imprint of the"check" The 2 side knobs can be adjusted up close or far away and you would use it to line up the check. Has been in our fmily since day one of it's existence. bought brand new by my sister& brother n law back in the 80's- 90's for $353 which is listed on the machine. PAYMASTER CHECK WRITER- Series X-550- w/ Key for"Locked Protection" as shown on front- This check writer measures about 8-1/2" front to back; 7-1/2" left to right; 7" tall- without the handle. The machine has a nice"wood grain" finish- with signs of use. Light scratches, light surface rust. The plate on the back shows the manufacturer: The Paymaster Corp. 1811 W. Winnemac Ave. Chicago, Ill. 60640" The original price of $149.50 is printed on the back. There is also a number printed on the back, bottom center, 87C237858" which is most likely the serial number. The check writer works- see photo of sample printing- it needs ink. The key turns and works as it should. The number levers work, although the lever in the thousand position is a bit stiff. The paper adjustment knobs work. The Clear/Repeat ... morelever works. Nice check writer! Use it- or display it!
