The item for sale is a bookbinding finishing tool- the agate head tip is approx. 30mm wide- and overall is approx. 370mm long inc the handle. There is a tiny hairline seen to one side of the agate- the agate tip is not loose and looks to be whipped in place with tape over the whipping. The brass barrel does have some knocks and dents. On the 30th of May 1832 John Paas, a manufacturer of brasses involved in the book binding industry, called at the workshop of James Cook, a book binder in Leicester. Cook was in debt to Paas for the sum of £25 and though some of that money was paid during the visit, Cook informed Paas that ... morehe would have to return in the evening, when the remaining debt would be settled. Accordingly Paas went back to the workshop on Wellington Street later on, arriving some time after six. At eight that night Cook went to"The Flying Horse, a nearby pub, where during the course of his time there he revealed that he had a substantial sum of money with him. When he returned to his workshop he told his landlady that he intended to be doing work that would require a large fire to be made up and that she should not feel alarmed at it. Since fires were often called for within the bookbinding work, this was not particularly unusual. Cook remained in the workshop, with the fire burning, from about half ten until half four the following morning. The fire continued to burn throughout the next day and by ten pm that next night it was sufficient enough to alarm John Nokes, the landlord of"The Flying Horse, who was convinced the building itself was on fire. Rare Matching Set Bronze Bookbinding Arabesque gold blind tool Italy16th Century
For auction is this Amazing Matching Set of 2 late 19th Century Arabesque dies for use in tooling the covers of leather. Vellum or cloth. This design is from the mid 16th Century northern Italy. When used properly these plates create an amazingly authentic impression. These dies are 1/4" inch thick and hold heat long and evenly. They are best used in a blocking press or heated and place in a standing press. They measure 3 3/4" x 2 3/4" The dies are in great condition for their age and have only minor surface wear. The back have a bit of scratching but the hallmarks of SR 63X are easy to read. Antique Bookbinding Tool Used Style: Decorative Size: The Face Impression is 1/16" wide and 1/16" tall Overall length With Handle: 7-3/4" This finishing tool is in great condition. Gane Brothers& Lane have been in business since 1846. There is no distinctive way to date their tools. And it is believed that the finishing tools they sold marked with the company name were made by other well know tool makers in the Chicago area. From other examples I have seen, I would date this tool from the early 1900's to mid 1920's. The tool is marked Gane Bros.
