It appears to have the original paint because the 5 and C on on the surface of the paint. There is some rust and lots of chips to the paint. But it is solid and works. When the wheel is loosened. There is some back and forth give to the right leg, but you have to try to get it to move. This could be tighted. But the nuts under the base are a bit rusty. The screw shaft is complete and it turns easily and smoothly. MEASUREMENTS The Plate: 10 2/16 x 15 5/16 inches. Vintage Automatic Bates Eyeleter. New these cost $350+. The address as shown on the item states Bates was located in Orange. NJ. A brief Google search showed Bates was located in Orange in the 30's and 40's. This came into our possession in the early 70s with a business acquisition. Newer ones have a different city. It was used for binding financial statements together since we got it. Many other uses- leather. Etc. It is missing the screw in the center of the circle. Appears to be in full working/moving order otherwise- things move smoothly. Some rust on the metal parts on the front- see picture. Some wear around the base. Visible in the picture of the bottom. Have not tried to clean it. Also shown in the pictures are two stamps. One appears to say D117 and the other Y1. Dimensions: 10 1/2" tall from base to very top 6 3/8" ... morewide across the base This is a hefty item- 4lbs. Plus it is just plain cool looking. Great collectable.

Four old bookmaking stamps for decorating paper/pages. All in excellent condition with no signs of damage/misuse/having been dropped or dented. In the first photo: the first one from the left(the partial curve shaped punch) is marked J.M. HOOLE& SONS 78 DUANE ST. N.Y. Its working surface is 17mm long. The other three are marked SNIDER& HOOLE CIN.O. Their working surfaces measure(from left to right) 18mm long. 23mm long, and 25mm long. Two are still tight on their handles; the other two are not and will need new handles.

This is an old book binders spine press probably in excess of a hundred years. The machine is as far as I can see in good order structurally but has decorative damage as a result of age related wear and tear. All the relevant parts move although I am not sure how it works. The handle is a soft material not wood and again I am not sure of its construction. There is a brass plate atttached to the foot of the machine name Fred Ulmer and his address in Farringdon st London The machine is german being made in Leipzig by Brohmen? I do not know much about this machine other than to say its really well engineered and very heavy. Superb example of an antique 19th century bookbinders gold leaf wheel with intricate pattern. I believe the wheel is brass and is stamped Timbury. Fetter Lane, London, who was an engraver and bookbinding toolcutter from 1785 to 1884. The wheel runs freely and the tool is firmly set in a wooden handle which looks original. A necessary tool for lettering spines in the round with brass, lead, or service type, it can also be used for the lettering of flat surfaces in lieu of a KwikPrint type of machine. Holds heat well and the brass can be water-cooled to proper temperature quickly without rusting. The wheel's double lines are imperfect(dings on the working edge) so it is not suitable for finished projects. Just under 24 inches long. Here we have something that is a bit unusual and that would be a creaser a tool used by Bookbinders and others to form a line in the leather. This tool was in with lots of other Bookbinding tools I bought years ago and I am sure it was used in that trade though could be used by other leather workers as well. Measures about 12 inch overall with about 8 1/2 inch of that being it's old wooden handle. Handle is good but does have some burn marks on the end where the iron was heated prior to use. Head has a partial mark that says.LOR& Co Phila Pa. Working tip may have been reformed at one time, not sure. Please see my photos which shows everything well.
