Powermatic Wood Lathe Model 45, Heavy Duty Vintage Machine, 4 Speed
This auction is for an old heavy-duty Powermatic wood lathe. Model 45. I don't know the year of manufacture, but they don't make them like this anymore! The lathe is 4 speed. The belt tension is relieved by moving the front lever. Allowing the turner to select different pulleys to change speeds. The lathe comes with a tool rest base, a 12" rest, a 6" rest, and a 6" faceplate. There is a ball bearing live center and a small fixture that came with the lathe but I don't remember what it is used for. I keep the ways and the moving parts of the base lightly lubricated with WD-40 and they work smoothly. The lathe runs well and is in good working order. The motor is wired for 110 v. I own a guitar repair shop and have used this lathe to turn custom handles for some of my tools. I turned the rasp handle in the photo out ... moreof Box Elder burl. I relocated to a smaller shop last year and now this lathe is more in the way than useful to me. So it has to go. Local pickup only, this sucker is HEAVY and will require 4 strong backs to lift it. I was told that this unit came off of a Powermatic 90 wood lathe built in the 60's or 70's. But I cannot verify what it actually fits. The diameter is 6 1/4" and it has a 5/8" roller bearing on the back. It also has a 5/8" hole in the edge, which I assume is for the handle. I was told that this 1/2 pulley came off of a Powermatic 90 wood lathe from the 60's or 70's. But I cannot verify that information. It is 6 1/4" in diameter, with a 1 1/8" shaft. POWERMATIC Model 45 Gap Bed Variable Speed Wood Woodworking Lathe
Up for sale is this Powermatic model 45 wood lathe. This lathe has a single phase 220V motor with the optional variable speed drive. This is the gap bed model which has a swing of 16 inches. The unit runs but will need to have the cord replaced as it is frayed. The condition of this is good but I see the tool post has been brazed and the cabinet door needs to be straigntened. The variable speed drive works but might need adjusting. Also included is a chip shield that bolts to the back of the lathe. I have a maintenance& parts manual that goes with this. This is no cheap China lathe. This was made in America and is 400+ pounds. These lathes are very desirable for their quality build.

These are stout lathes used for decades in school shop environments so they are pretty bullet proof. This one is 60's vintage. Originally green with the"racing stripe" 12" swing. 16" over gap bed. 39" between centers. 1" head and ... moretailstock spindles. 63" overall length, 350 lbs. weight without motor so figure about 30 Lbs. for the motor. The speed range is 350-2800 rpm per the Powermatic catalogue. The 3/4hp motor was made by Westinghouse. Speed is 1725 RPM. Dual voltage. One speed. All speed changes are by the Reeves Drive lever. There are factory specs on the vintage machinery.org site. Head and tailstock centers align nicely.The machine has#2 Morse taper and 1X8" threads if I remember correctly. The tailstock and banjo lock down tight as ticks. The Banjo hole is 1 1/16" bushed down to 1" as that is the post size of the tool rests. The knock out hole seems to be 1/2" and the lathe will allow outboard turning. I have this listed locally so I reserve the right to end the auction at any time. Powermatic 90 Gap Bed Wood Lathe
Powermatic 90 gap bed lathe. Probably dates to the'70s. This machine is in excellent working condition and was lightly used in a high school woodworking program. Machine has a speed dial which works on a variable speed drive. 500-4000 RPM. 3 phase leeson motor. 12" swing over bed, 17" swing over gap. 38" between centers. Bed is 36" from floor. 67" long overall. Lathe comes with a heavy duty plexi and wire shield. I can deliver locally for a reasonable fee, or pickup locally. I can arrange to have the machine freighted, but it is longer than a standard pallet.
