And your life may depend on it, use what the US military uses. 5 KW Diesel Generator- only 101 hours total time MEP-002A US Military Surplus This 5kw diesel generator is built“military tough” and will run almost forever. This is the type of unit you want for dependable steady power. This air cooled diesel engine is rated at 9 horsepower at only 1800 rpm. There is no coolant to change. Leak, or freeze. It has redundant electric fuel pumps and a master mechanical injector pump. This generator is also resistant to EMP attacks and solar storms. The air filter is large and easily replaceable, and it has a cold-weather intake diverter. You can switch from normal air filtration to the cold-weather setting that will suck air in over the exhaust manifold to pre-heat the air. This is an excellent cold weather feature.Small ... moregasoline generators run at much higher rpm's and higher engine temperatures. They are rated only for intermittent duty and will not last like these low speed diesel generators. This generator has three voltage output modes: 1] 120 V single phase 2 wire. 2] 120/240 V single phase 3 wire. 3] 120/208 V 3 phase 4 wire. It has a Whites 4 cylinder diesel engine. I bought it surplus I was going to use it for myself. I put all new fluids and filters in it and it fired right up. I was experimenting loading it and seeing how it would do. I inadvertently overloaded it and the safety did not trip and I damaged the gen head. Output is switcheable you can set it for 120v@ 106 amp single phase. 120/240@ 53 amps per leg single phase or 240 3-phase at 36 amps. This unit is the more desirable model that will produce standard household power at 60HZ(Some models are for aircraft and cannot be used for house power backup) It can also be used for 3 phase power This unit is very heavy duty and is designed to run 24X7 using very little fuel. In addition to the day tank it has built in. It also has provisions to attach an external fuel tank to it. This is an excellent machine for back up power. Hunting camps or other off grid usage. Mep 003a military surplus Onan diesel engine 10k+. I bought a junk unit for parts and stripped it to the frame. I power washed it and painted it. I reassembled the unit with a fresh. Rebuilt engine and a NEW generator head. New mounts were $100. I had this running and making electricity couple years ago. I wanted to replace control boxes, but have never done it. About $1000. The hard work is done. It now needs some tweeking and fine tuning. In all honesty I cannot say if unit will need more money put into it. Like I said, I wanted to replace control panel boxes. Necessary? Don't think so.just thought unit would be new if I did. Fuel tank. I spent almost $300 getting the tank professionally cleaned and sealed. I have over $2500 into this generator. This generator is rated at 15KW. 3 phase but easily converted to single phase. The diesel cranks easily, the generator developes power as it should. I don't know of any problems, you can buy it today and have it in service tomorrow. As it was built for the military it is designed for constant use. The generator runs at 60 cycles. not 400Hz. Which can't be used for most electronics, appliances, heat and AC, etc. This generator was purchased around 2001 to use as a backup power for a radio station. In nearly 15 years the power went out only twice so its not needed. The generator is started once a week for 10 minutes to make sure everything is working. I started it and ran last Sunday with no issues at all. When purchased it how something like 12 hours on the meter and we have put around 100 more hours mainly testing it.
