I was told it was a 3 phase generator that could be converted to ... morea 2 phase very easily. At that time the unit was completely refurbished. It was military gray. Shrink wrapped and in working order. Weather has taken its toll on outside.It has sat on my trailer in the backyard since then. I brought a 5KW gas generator to fix up the home I purchased. I've been told that the generator came from the Vietnam era, and can power a small military base. Seems like a stretch but I'm not up on this stuff. Serial number is in photo's and could probably tell you a lot if you knew where to look for the info. Fuel tank shows signs of corrosion build up when I recently opened the cap. Supposedly when it was refurbished(Northern Tool is where I was told it came from) the engine was fogged and it was prepped for storage. I'm sure they where not expecting outside storage. Friends tell me that if you know diesel engines that this unit could be cleaned and serviced, and be up and running no problem. Unit is sold as is, where is. No warranties expressed or implied! Vintage Miltary generator on trailer powered Willys jeep engine. 10kW rating This generator is probably Korean War vintage. Model number is PE-95-K I got it through an auction from a small town fire department. It's rated 10kW. But that's the very conservative. It's 10kW continuously. No matter how hot it is or if your on top of a mountain. It's 10kW and 12.5kVa. power factor 0.8) That means it'll handle inductive loads well. It's also is very good at starting large motors. It can be configured for 120v or 240 volts. It just requires moving a couple jumpers. I have a copy of the manual which describes how to do this. I also found a description on the internet of how to wire it for 2 120 circuits and 1 240 circuit at the same time. Like a house is wired) As is, it just has 4 120v receptacles. It has a governor which keeps it at 1800rpm. There is a knob to pull out to make the engine idle at a lower speed. I guess this is used when starting a cold engine so it can warm up at low speed. I think it originally had some kind of automatic choke. But that was replaced in a manual push/pull knob. It would have originally been just a skid mounted unit. But at some point a tongue and axle were added. But the original skid wasn't hacked up in the process so it could be returned to original configuration. The hitch takes a standard 2 inch ball. It sits pretty level with the hitch ball at standard height of 18 inches. Has 15 inch rims. 5 on 4.5 lug pattern. The unit weighs about 1500 pounds. At the outside edge of the tires its just under 4 feet wide. The enclosure is about 62 inches long. Including the tongue its about 10 ft long. The generator is an Onan that produces 120V 1ph, 240V 1ph, 120V 3 ph and 120/208V 3 ph. It has electric start with 2 batteries and starts right up. I used the 120V 1ph and it worked fine, I did not try 240V or 3ph. The last photo shows the exhaust on one cylinder that has oil on it. The other cylinder is the same way but not as much. I was told it was just head gaskets. I did not try to tighten the heads. The oil makes this smoke a little bit but I was told it was not a hard fix to replace the gaskets. Onan 4 Cylinder Diesel Engine W/3 Hrs Run Time on a 10kw 400Hz Military GenSet
Here is a 4 cylinder air cooled Onan diesel engine with only 3 Hours TOTAL run time on a 10kw 400hz military aviation generator. Manufactured Feb 1989 by Libby Corp. The intake and exhaust as well as the battery terminals were taped and sealed shut with military looking duct take and plastic. The fuel tank and crankcase were tagged as being empty and to fill before operating. Starts and runs like it should. Took a couple minutes to get the air out of the lines and smoked a little first few seconds on the first start. But after that no smoke other than normal black smoke when reving up to operating speed from idle. Set on 120/220 and gauge indicates these voltages. Showing about 40lbs oil pressure after it warmed up, actually pegged the gauge(50 psi) when cold. The military rating of 10Kw is probably very conservative, they usually rate their ... moreequipment to run at a percentage of it's actual potential. Assume this machines original intended purpose was for flight line powering of aircraft hence the 400Hz, but you should be able to run any resistive load such as lights and heaters. Probably other ways to use it. And in case you missed it. It's powered by an Onan 4 cyl diesel engine showing 3 Hrs as of this posting. Rebuilt engine and a NEW generator head. New mounts were $100. I had this running and making electricity couple years ago. I wanted to replace control boxes, but have never done it. About $1000. The hard work is done. It now needs some tweeking and fine tuning. In all honesty I cannot say if unit will need more money put into it. Like I said, I wanted to replace control panel boxes. This is a military generator and the rating of 5kw is applicable to operation in extreme conditions like high altitude and temperature. Under sea-level conditions these units are known to deliver 7kW continuously- for weeks. Uncle Sam pays big bucks for these generators and they are intended for continuous use/abuse. I have another one of these units at my vacation home on the Chesapeake Bay and it has powered my neighbor's and my house for almost a week after hurricane Sandy without any problem. The generator has a built-in diesel tanks(good for up to 10 hours) that gets automatically refilled if an external tank is provided. The generator will pump from ... morethe external tank into the built-in tank. So no complicated plumbing is required. The generator has 225 running hours. These generators last thousands of hours- unlike the units from the box stores. New batteries have been installed and these will start the generator easily even when"stone cold" The batteries get recharged by the running engine.
