I BOUGHT THIS GENERATOR 2 YEARS AGO. From brand new the electronic controller would blow the fuse.After many months and controllers Kohler brought it to their shop and ran it under load with their test equipment. Turns out there was very small ohms resistance bad in the stator. Not enough to bother the output of the generator but enough to blow the very small 2 amp fuse for the controller. Kohler replaced the stator and controller and then ran it for 3 hour to assure the problem was fixed.I have all the supporting documents to go along with it. Unit has 180 hours on it. My plan was to build our house and barn with it and then use it for backup. 20 KW Detroit Diesel with Emerson Electric Generator
2346# of the way America used to make equipment. This is an old diesel engine driven 1800 rpm 3 ph 20 KW Emerson AC generator. It has been in storage in my warehouse and is dusty but ready to go. Well. The battery was new from Caterpillar but it may need replacement due to non-use. I got this unit off ebay about ten years ago after we had a big tornado here vowing I would never be unprepared again. I bought it as I was familiar with Detroit Diesel and Emerson, sent it to the Detroit dealer for evaluation and service, spent money on a new one wire alternator and enjoyed watching it crank right up and run like it should. It is a 2 cycle and they will all smoke for a second or two when cranking, that is characteristic. The generator operates properly they said. I was happy with it. This design was used by the railroads for refrigerated cars ... morein the past. It does not use much fuel per hour. See Google 2-71 Detroit. The design was also used by the Bell system for emergency power. This particular unit came from Florida through ebay and I believe it was a railroad unit. At first that discouraged me but then I decided they would care for equipment if anybody would, have the money and cannot risk a carload of frozen food to a bad generator so I bought it and have been pleased. Lastly, it is said that the 2-71 can run on straight vegetable oil and as a rice farm owner with wells that appealed to me when diesel was(and will be) $4.00 per gallon. But I never bought the press to extract the oil so this claim is just hearsay although how to do it is on the internet. The oil has to be preheated by the exhaust for example and then it will work they say. Again, I do not warrant that it will operate on soy oil but it sure sounds like it will. We put a small tank on it in front of the radiator to keep the fuel lines full. Ideally it will be plumbed to a skid tank that is filled by a distributor. Come see it run.
