Lovely vintage gentleman's circular silver plate tuxedo or shirt stud box lined in wine red velvet with silver braid. The lid of the box bears a stamped design of flowers and leafy scrolls surmounted by a silver plate stud as the handle or knob for the lid. The underside of the box is stamped with the rampant horse mark of the Victor Silver plate company and the notation"quadruple plate" The logo is surmounted with the letter B and underneath is the number 20. Some one has scratched the letters"Al" into the underside of the box at the left and the letter"Z" at the right. Probably owners initials. In all of the dark areas the color is completely black. Looks lighter because of flash of camera. This auction is for 2 rolls of Scott# 1897-1c Omnibus. Although I'm not completely positive. I believe that the plate numbers on this roll are 1 and 2. Another roll from the same grouping had these plate numbers. The above photos are stock photos. But centering and quality of available rolls are about the same. These rolls have completely intact cellophane. I also noticed that the labels from both rolls appear to have a double impression. Alternating plate numbers occur every 24 stamps on this roll. This is a shallow bowl or plate. That measures 10" in diameter and has a pierce cut open handle at each side. The rim is both scalloped and ruffled. There are no chips or cracks but there is some light crazing and a bit of fading of the colors here and there. The underside has a stamped mark and it is so faint it is unreadable. H owever. It measures 6.5 tall approx and is 6 in diameter. Overall it is in rough condition but the swan is just too beautiful to toss this wonderful piece. It is marked Meriden B Company– with scales. Then the number 4800. There is a lot of wear and the bottom of the dish is very warped. The lid has pretty engraving and the letter E on the underside. The organizer is made from heavy cream colored plastic and is 17 5/8 inches long and 5 1/8 inches wide. It is divided into three V-shaped sections. Each decorated with bright decals of oranges with green leaves and white flowers. Each slot is 4 1/8 inches long. 2 inches wide at the top(narrowing to 1/2 inch wide at the bottom) and 4 1/2 inches deep. The top slot is labeled"LETTERS. the center slot is labeled"NOTES" and the bottom slot is labeled"MISC, the labeling on each is done in painted black 1/4 inch tall block letters. F. BRIGDEN CANADIAN ARTIST COPPER PRINTING PLATE COPPER ON WOOD WESTERN SCENE
This auction is for very historical copper on wood printing plates done at the Brigden's Printing Engraving company in Toronto Ontario. Frederick Brigden was an artist and worked for a few different engraving firms before he was the sole owner of Brigden's Engraving Company Ltd. I have two other sets of printing plates listed on ebay. There probably were more plates for this picture. But I only have two. Each plate has been engraved a little different as each copper plate would have been done in a separate color. These plates are no. 5 and both have engraved on the side on one and end on the other.Brigden's Limited Engraver's Toronto. One of the plates would be yellow ink and the other plate would be red ink. The copper has been secured on a piece of 3/4" hardwood for the purpose of the printing press. This plate is signed ... moreon the one plate on the bottom left. It is backwords, so I think this one is F. Brigden that did it, but not totally sure. These plates are not perfect, they have been used a lot. By the size of them, I'm thinking they could have been postcards or greeting cards. They are approx. 6 1/2" by 5" There are some good reading sites on the net about the Brigden printing company. It's interesting to know that Frederick Brigden employed some members of the Group Of Seven, back before they were the Group Of Seven. The scene on these plates looks more like Western Canada, but they are not titled on the back. I also read he did photo engraving, but am not sure if that is what this is. Brigden also did engraving art for the Eatons catalogue's.
