Vintage Decorative Plate Advertising Kotok Hardware Co. Vineland, NJ
This is a vintage plate made by Edwin M. Knowles China Co. USA) that has a color image of the head and shoulders of President George Washington in the center. The plate is actually advertising Kotok Hardware Co. in Vineland. NJ that I believe closed for business in the 1960s. The plate is 9 inches in diameter with a 1/8th inch bronze color band around the outside. The center has a 3/14 inch tall by 2 1/2 inch wide color image of the head and shoulders of President George Waashington. There is a soft ridged design around the image. Underneath the image is KOTOK HARDWARE Co. in gold and gold outline print. On either side of the plate is a slightly scallop design edge. The back of the plate has a black stamp of a basket with Semi-Vitreous, Edwin M. Knowles China Co. Made in U.S.A. 39-7" The plate is in good to fair vintage condition with ... moreno chips or cracks. There is wear of the print of the stamp on the back. Some spots of wear on the bronze band around the edge, some spots of discoloration on the back of the plate and a few china blurbs.

The 1988 RUSSIAN LEGENDS series of limited edition decorative plates was the first collectors plate series ever produced in Russia. The twelve-plate series depicts famous Russian legends and fairytales. They are patterned after the designs and style found on Russian lacquer boxes from the village of Palekh. The plates were produced with 16-17 layers of ceramic pigments and in 18kt gold on hard fired porcelain. The firing period was limited to 195 days at the historic Vinogradoff Porcelain factory. This piece dates to 1872. The pitcher is very well made. With double walls for good insulation. The lid of the pitcher has a nicely cast finial in the shape of a polar bear on an ice floe. The front of the piece is monogrammed with'R' in Gothic script. The capacity of the pitcher is about 96 ounces, or 2.8 liters, when filled to a reasonable amount where the pitcher can be carried without spilling. The underside of the piece is hallmarked with the maker's mark for Gorham as well as the anchor mark used by Gorham for silver plate items. The dish is quite beautiful especially the handle styled in the design of grapes and grape vine or branch. The piece has a cartouche or family armorial( Crowned Lion with tongue extended) engraved in the center of the front of the lid. Up for bid is a very beautiful hand painted Swedish rosemaling plate. The plate is made of wood and is signed by the artist Helen D. Mortenson. It is a very cute painting of a young girl holding flowers. The inscription reads Solen lyser aven pa liten stuga. This translates in English to"the sun is also shining on a small cabin. I had to use the internet to translate the saying, I do not speak Swedish. This is a very unique finely painted plate.
