This is a good example of a French National Guard Short Sword Model 1855 that dates from the French Second Empire. It is mounted with a double grooved blade that measures 19 3/8 inches in length which although shows to have received cleanings from over the years. Does remain in good condition with just some light staining. The solid brass ribbed hilt remains tight and sturdy. The leather scabbard is brass fitted and also remains nice in condition with all the stitching still tightly intact. Included in this auction is one vintage Soviet flag: Silk Kazakh SSR Flag. This item was used/ displayed in the Headquarters of the Soviet National Honor Guard in the Lefortovo District near the Baumanskaya Metro Station(sorry. It's been about 15 years and my memory of street names is a little fuzzy) I met my boyfriend. Sergei, in 1994. He was a lieutenant in the National Honor Guard(he is pictured above in Aleksandrovskii Sad' in the front of the unit wearing the dark uniforms, and again near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, second from the right) My host family lived not far from his barracks, about a block away from the factory where they make Moskovskaya Vodka(near the Yauza River- I could see the factory from my flat) We met on the metro. He attended the arrival of Queen Elizabeth's historic visit to Russia in 1994. And presented ... morefor her in Aleksandrovskii Cad and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He also was in the unit that greeted President Clinton, and many other arrivals of other Presidents and Dignitaries to Russia during that turbulent period in its history. We lived together for several years in Moscow(yes. I know it was illegal and yes, there were times when we had to come up with some pretty interesting lies to explain why we were together) He said they were cleaning out the building; he often came home with old Soviet stuff. These flags were just a few of the things he brought me. They have been used. Have stains, a couple have holes. I'm not claiming they're pristine, but they do come from a cool place. This is a lovely vintage silverplate water pitcher by Leonard. About 9 inches tall. The pitcher is footed and has a very useful ice lip or guard. Just imagine this on a fully set dining table, very elegant. Nice and heavy, and I see no problems, except it needs a really good polishing. The feet and handle are definitely darker than the body.
