Dixon mold polish for hot casting Linotype letterpress lead
A partially used can of Dixon mold polish used in our old letterpress/Linotype shop. It's fairly heavy. So I'm thinking it has quite a bit in it, but no way am I prying this lid off to find out, as I spilled some of this on a concrete floor one time and have never experienced anything so slick. A little bit goes a long way. Here is what the packaging says: To remove and prevent metal from accumulating on spacebands at casting point. At least once a week before graphiting spacebands clean the sleeve at the casting point with Dixon's Mold Polish, applied with a polishing block. Wipe clean with a cloth. I bought this press in 1976 from a man who used it to print wood and linoleum cuts. He graduated to a larger press. In 1977 I printed a chapbook of poetry in a run of 200. I did the same in 1982. In between. I printed some gag business cards for me and my friends, and some wood and linoleum cuts that my wife and friends made. I haven’t used the press since 1982. The press is complete except for rollers and roller bearings/trucks. When I used it. I kept all moving parts lubricated. It has surface rust on some areas. It still moves easy, but I’d recommend a thorough cleaning and lubricating before using it. Along with the press are accessories including chase irons. A very clever design that would administer the solvent to a rag with a depressing of the spout. Although it has been polished at some point- this piece still has plenty of age and patina galore. Dents too! The top shows quite a bit of denting and distortions. The stamped number plate is really this piece's eye catcher. This would make a lovely display piece which is what I had it for- for years. I am unsure if it is actually in working order or if it is leak free- as I have never used it. But the spout does depress and return. So buyer beware. Intended to sell for decoration. Simply lovely.
