Offered: H.B. Rouse Slug Clipper. Great item for novice/hobby letterpress printer as well as professional. The H.B. Rouse name is synonymous with the very best in printers equipment and tools. This clipper has been completely gone through oiled where needed and blade has been sharpened. This clipper operates/works smoothly and will supply the user years of service. The bed on this clipper has a graduations showing picas and half pica. There are numerical picas stamped into the bed starting at 30 and even number marked down through 4. The gauge has a button that when depressed allows user to remove gauge if you desire to cut a longer slug by eye or change to desired slug length on bed. The shorter lines on the bed denote half pica(6 point) graduations. The longer lines denote full pica graduations. The gauge has solid locking feature that ... morematches the gear like teeth in the shelf. When you cut with the gauge properly engaged the length of the slug is exactly the same every time. H.B. rouse made three versions of this clipper/cutter. The one offered is the top of the line. For comparison I have included all three Rouse versions of this clipper: 1 Complete with gauge. Same item as offered this auction. 2 With 1 1/2 inch shelf. No gauge. 3 With 30 pica graduated shelf. No gauge. Letterpress Universal Monotab Broach
Monotab broaches were in use in composing rooms up to about 1962. When making up rule forms such as order forms. Invoices, etc, where vertical column rules were needed as well as horizontal rules the Monotab was a neat and simple way to create type forms. The regular strip rules normally on 2 pt. Elrod strips. Either on side or centered rules. The cutters were easily set in position on a removable bar which you could lay right on layout and turn little thumb scews to exact positions of vertical rule. After cutters were mounted on the bar it is returned to broach and you can cut as many rules as needed. The type form needed high base material or blank lino slugs for interline spacing so copper strips are supported at type high. The broach cutters punch a small triangular hole for each vertical into which the copper strips(see photo) slip into ... moreform and are trimmed to desired to length with wire cutter and held in place by top and bottom rules which are not punched, Of course many forms were simply ruled with a pen and printed offset. A significant portion of forms were being printed from rubber plates on cylinder presses which created snap-outs and continuous stuff. Those rubber plates were made from monotab forms. Since the rubber stretches. We used a line gauge that was made to allow 1-1/2 points per inch for stretch. It still could be used for letterpress forms. but you would need some high base material. 12 packages of copper strips included.

Large No 2 Challenge Hempel style wedge Quoins & matching Key Letterpress type
Offering: Largest size wedge style(No. 2 Hempel) letterpress quoins. Includes six pair of 4 inch Challenge Co. Also known as No. 2 Hempel wedge style quoin and Jumbo, which is the largest of three sizes that this style of quoin was made in. Two pieces or halves are required to lock up a form in a chase. This larger quoin is ideal for locking up larger press sizes as well as Proof press beds. Length of quoin is approx. 4 inches long. The No. 2 quoin key included will only work on a No. 2 quoin, as the teeth on the quoins are at a different distance apart. The third and forth picture are of one side and the flip side of the quoins. If the teeth get chewed up as they some times do from heavy use in large print shops the quoins will become useless because the quoins cannot be tightened properly. Vintage Wood & Brass Gauge Old, Antique Nice Patina
A wonderful antique gauge. I think it's for typesetting. From a very eclectic relative's estate. It measures a little over 23 inches all together, and has measurements up to 300. The numbers are carved into the wood by hand. You can see if you zoom in. Rather primitive. Hand made feel. The numbers are slightly larger at 50. 100, 150, etc. and smaller at 15. 25, 35, 45. There is a brass edge. And brass end pieces, along with little brass fasteners at intervals all along the wood. It's got a great old patina. A small crack in the wood at the top-please see photos. On the back are some initials. And some scrapings. Maybe some other initials removed? A great old industrial piece. Displays wonderfully. If you know anything about it. Please share your knowledge.
