Rouse 6-Inch Job Stick, Composing Stick
This is a 6-inch(actually. 5-3/4-inches in total length, although typically referred to as a 6-inch stick) composing stick. This is a job stick, manufactured by the Rouse Manufacturing Company of Chicago. The stick has the standard lever under the clamp for adjusting to agate(half-pica) measurements. While the serial numbers on the stick and knee do not match, we have checked the stick for accuracy, and it is as accurate as sticks with matching numbers. This stick has"HHS43" stamped on the front of the body of the stick, and"Huntington East High" scratched on the back of the stick. The stick is in good working order, with some rust, which does not affect the operation of the stick. Antique 12" JOB STICK - H.B. ROUSE & CO. - CHICAGO - Letterpress Composing
This is the ROUSE JOB STICK or COMPOSING STICK made by H.B. Rouse& Co. of Chicago. It is 2 inches wide and 12 inches long. It will measure and hold up to 58 picas of type. I'm not sure of the age on this but I've included a description of it from the B B& S Catalog of 1907. They were made for a long time. The lock mechanism works just fine and all of the metal appears to be straight. It does show some pitting on the nickel plating on several of the surfaces. The pica numbers and marks are all readable. But 57 is a little hard to see. Otherwise, the photos pretty much tell the story. It has been cleaned of rust and feels smooth to the touch everywhere. It comes from a clean. Non-smoking environment. Shipping will be in a flat-rate padded envelope. I can change that to a box upon request but the cost is higher.

Up for auction is a very nice Vintage Printers/Typographer's Solid Brass H.B. Rouse Sliding Gauge/Ruler. It is in great condition with minor usage ware and not bent or dinged. This item came from an estate of many letterpress items(some of which I will be listing over the course of the next few days) and I believe this person worked for the Cincinnati Enquirer back in the 40s and later. It measures Approx.7.5 inches closed and 13 inches fully open and is labeled PICA on one side and AGATE on the other. I have tried my best to describe this item accurately. Here we have a nice older composing stick made by and marked H.B. ROUSE& Co. This is the tool used to hold the print used in the old time letterpress printing presses like the ones used to print newspapers. This example measures about 8 inch long and 2 inch wide.Condition is VERY GOOD, no missing parts and no damage, some staining and light surface rust but no pitting or other damage. Seems to work as it should. Vintage 8” Rouse Composing Stick(Job model to set pica or nonpareil) Made by Chicago's H. B. Rouse Co. Eventually the leading maker of composing sticks. The stick consists of a flat plate(bed) To which are attached the end(head) the rail(stile) and the adjustable stop(knee) The knee may be moved along the stile to the required measure via a gauge on the bed and then fastened securely by the action of a clamp which anchors the knee in place with a lever. The gauge, in whole picas, is marked along the foot of the bed. This model is a 34 pica(5-5/8” book measure) Job Stick(rarer than the Standard or Improved Standard) A graduated 2-piece stick which sets picas or nonpareils(1/2 pica measures) Four teeth in the knee fit into rectangular slots(each separated by 1 pica) in the rail to give accurate adjustment to picas. By turning a small lever ... morebeneath the clamp in a 180º arc. The teeth move, changing the increment from picas to nonpareils. These Rouses are serial numbered on the knee AND on the end to prevent mismatching. This piece is in great shape. there are some metal stains. But not severe. All markings, serial numbers, branding and instructions stamped or engraved into the piece are fully readable. Nothing is bent, everything is square, the square holes in the stile are sharp, the adjustment feature in the knee is sound and robust. the bed, stile and head are all firmly attached. the U-clamp, which is hinged to the knee, works smoothly, the teeth in the knee that engage the square holes in the stile are sharp, straight, and hold a position with no play. This stick was patented and designed over 100 years ago and last offered in trade catalogs in the early twentieth century. This model composing stick was replaced by the Rouse"Job Stick. This is a somewhat hard to find design style composing stick capable of accurately setting measure in either even pica or half pica measure. H.B. Rouse one of the most revered and respected names in Letterpress equipment. Composing stick has matching serial numbers on both the composing stick bed and knee. Serial number is: 8387. Stick is straight and true. No bent or warped surfaces. This composing stick is free of engraved or stamped identifiers that you sometimes find. Stick is in like new condition. H.B. In addition to the above information this composing stick was available in three optional depths. Two inches, two and a quarter inches and two and one half inches. Offered: H.B. Rouse Slug Clipper. Great item for novice/hobby letterpress printer as well as professional. The H.B. Rouse name is synonymous with the very best in printers equipment and tools. This clipper has been completely gone through oiled where needed and blade has been sharpened. This clipper operates/works smoothly and will supply the user years of service. The bed on this clipper has a graduations showing picas and half pica. There are numerical picas stamped into the bed starting at 30 and even number marked down through 4. The gauge has a button that when depressed allows user to remove gauge if you desire to cut a longer slug by eye or change to desired slug length on bed. The shorter lines on the bed denote half pica(6 point) graduations. The longer lines denote full pica graduations. The gauge has solid locking feature that ... morematches the gear like teeth in the shelf. When you cut with the gauge properly engaged the length of the slug is exactly the same every time. H.B. rouse made three versions of this clipper/cutter. The one offered is the top of the line. For comparison I have included all three Rouse versions of this clipper: 1 Complete with gauge. Same item as offered this auction. 2 With 1 1/2 inch shelf. No gauge. 3 With 30 pica graduated shelf. No gauge.
