Rouse 6-Inch Job Stick, Composing Stick
This is a 6-inch(actually. 5-3/4-inches in total length, although typically referred to as a 6-inch stick) composing stick. This is a job stick, manufactured by the Rouse Manufacturing Company of Chicago. The stick has the standard lever under the clamp for adjusting to agate(half-pica) measurements. While the serial numbers on the stick and knee do not match, we have checked the stick for accuracy, and it is as accurate as sticks with matching numbers. This stick has"HHS43" stamped on the front of the body of the stick, and"Huntington East High" scratched on the back of the stick. The stick is in good working order, with some rust, which does not affect the operation of the stick. Antique 12" JOB STICK - H.B. ROUSE & CO. - CHICAGO - Letterpress Composing
This is the ROUSE JOB STICK or COMPOSING STICK made by H.B. Rouse& Co. of Chicago. It is 2 inches wide and 12 inches long. It will measure and hold up to 58 picas of type. I'm not sure of the age on this but I've included a description of it from the B B& S Catalog of 1907. They were made for a long time. The lock mechanism works just fine and all of the metal appears to be straight. It does show some pitting on the nickel plating on several of the surfaces. The pica numbers and marks are all readable. But 57 is a little hard to see. Otherwise, the photos pretty much tell the story. It has been cleaned of rust and feels smooth to the touch everywhere. It comes from a clean. Non-smoking environment. Shipping will be in a flat-rate padded envelope. I can change that to a box upon request but the cost is higher.

Vintage Antique letterpress printing 16. Mahogany & Brass COMPOSING STICK
I am not a printer. But I do collect wooden tools that are classic. This qualifies, and if you look at the pictures you will have to agree. It has the number 16. on it, is 19 1/8" long 2 1/2" high and 15/16" deep. It evidently was used in the Baltimore area if the Type left in it is any indicator. I have tried to find a comparable but found only one and it was described as turn of the century antique. I will leave this up to the buyers to set the price. Vtg Rouse 8" composing stick ('Job' model) for cold type, letterpress, printing
Vintage 8” Rouse Composing Stick(Job model to set pica or nonpareil) Made by Chicago's H. B. Rouse Co. Eventually the leading maker of composing sticks. The stick consists of a flat plate(bed) To which are attached the end(head) the rail(stile) and the adjustable stop(knee) The knee may be moved along the stile to the required measure via a gauge on the bed and then fastened securely by the action of a clamp which anchors the knee in place with a lever. The gauge, in whole picas, is marked along the foot of the bed. This model is a 34 pica(5-5/8” book measure) Job Stick(rarer than the Standard or Improved Standard) A graduated 2-piece stick which sets picas or nonpareils(1/2 pica measures) Four teeth in the knee fit into rectangular slots(each separated by 1 pica) in the rail to give accurate adjustment to picas. By turning a small lever ... morebeneath the clamp in a 180º arc. The teeth move, changing the increment from picas to nonpareils. These Rouses are serial numbered on the knee AND on the end to prevent mismatching. This piece is in great shape. there are some metal stains. But not severe. All markings, serial numbers, branding and instructions stamped or engraved into the piece are fully readable. Nothing is bent, everything is square, the square holes in the stile are sharp, the adjustment feature in the knee is sound and robust. the bed, stile and head are all firmly attached. the U-clamp, which is hinged to the knee, works smoothly, the teeth in the knee that engage the square holes in the stile are sharp, straight, and hold a position with no play. Rare &Unique "Star" 10"Letterpress Composing Stick Nickle Plated & Collectable
Offered: One 10 i nch Composing Stick manufactured by The Star Tool Manufacturing Company of Springfield. Ohio. This stick design was patented and designed over 100 years ago. I found the these patent dates on a similar Star composing stick I own: Oct. 11,1904 and Oct. 31, 1905. This is a somewhat hard to find design style composing stick capable of accurately setting measure in either even pica or half pica measure. The unique indents on the underside of the composing stick bed allow the knee to lock into those indents with the wedge like locking action of the knee. When the knee is locked into place by sliding thumb lock toward bed backstop, measure is accurately locked into place. When pushed to the opposite direction knee slides easily to desired measure. Offered: One 8 i nch"Yankee Job Stick" Composing Stick manufactured by R. HOE. This stick design was patented and designed over 100 years ago. The following Patent date is below the name R. HOE on the composing stick: FEB. 87(that's February 1887. This a very old stick that was made by the same company that also manufactured Iron Hand presses of the late 1800's. The stamped letters U.S. P.O. and U.S.G.P.O. gives this composing stick a significant timeframe in printing history. A time before the general use of Linotype machines(invented by Otto Mergenthaler in the late 1800's) and all printing was set one letter at a time. Hard to imagine a type compositor standing in front of a type case setting type line after line all day long. This is truly a conversation piece that takes it to the next level. I acquired this composing ... morestick from a printing equipment dealer back in the 80's and thought at the time this was a find. The dealer was located in the Hartford. Connecticut region of the Northeast and traveled the East coast acquiring printing equipment at shop auctions and the like. This fella was not a stranger to traveling to New York City and Boston or anywhere to snag a bargain. As you can see this stick has plenty of wear from use as well as has numbers identifying the bed and knee a practice that large printing entities would use to identify. Catalog and perhaps assign to a compositor in a large shop with numerous compositors. The steel knee and brass clamp with tightening knob are uniquely designed to attach around the curved backstop of the bed. When knob is tightened the knee locks securely and squarely for accurate lines of equal measure. This is a perfect composing stick for use with even of half pica measure work. The knee has four pre-drilled holes that correspond with the holes on composing stick bed to accurately provide even or half pica measure in stick. The graduations on the outside edge denote one pica increments every third pica graduation is etched with pica number corresponding to that etched graduation. This is a stainless H B Rouse& Co. letter press composing stick. It is 10" long and the last No. on it is 45 with a line afterward which I assume is 46.
