HP Spectrum Analyzer RF SECTION 8555A for 141T mainframe analyzer. This one is a spare I have had on the shelf for 20 years for my 141T. And only have used it a few times. It was with the phone company before that, so probably well maintained. Please note: Auction is for the RF section and its manual only. Whole analyzer is shown to illustrate operation. 01 to 18 GHz RF head for HP 141T spectrum Analyzer. works to 42 GHz with external mixer) Condition: Tested. But not fully calibrated. I did the performance test on Page 4-1 of the operating and service manual(included in auction) One of the pictures shows the signal. The level is about 5dB low, and I did not bother to adjust the RF level control, because you will need to calibrate to your IF section. But it appears that frequency and amplitude are within adjustment limits. Another picture ... moreshows reception of a local digital TV station. The signal is about 50 dB above the noise floor. I have also observed the FM band. But didn't record it. SW signals are also evident with a short wire antenna. The attenuator has a problem. It seems to be fine in the 0 and 10 dB attenuation positions. But the 20 and 30 dB positions show excess attenuation. 40 and 50dB seem OK. Either the switch had dirty contacts or perhaps the attenuator elements are damaged. In my experience, this is only a minor inconvenience. At 500 Mhz, the bad attenuator settings are better, perhaps indicating capacity coupling across a bad contact. The main type N input jack has one of four of the little contacts broken. It seems to make contact fine using the other three. But you may want to be a bit careful not to damage it further. I keep an adaptor, BNC or other type connected permanently. I have not checked all the bands since I have no signal sources at microwave frequencies. The band switch seems to work properly. I have not checked every BW and Swept range. But switching through them didn't notice any problem. The 1/2 inch thick operating and service manual contains full details if you need to

It is the Japanese answer to AGILENT HP 8563E with better phase noise specifications. You can see 50Hz noise sidebands 90dB down on a microwave signal; try doing this with another spectrum analyzer! Do not confuse it with the older R3271 analyzer. The R3271A is newer. Better built and has no known flaws. It is beyond me why people are still buying(for high prices) old and much less performing HP 859X series or awful old TEK analyzers when you have these advanced units becoming so affordable nowadays. This one can over-range from DC to 31.8GHz and is calibrated. It is also highly suitable for EMC testing. Nice piece of equipment! You can make power measurements with it as well as generate an RF carrier signal a custom power level at any frequency 10-1000 GHz. This is nice because then you can do simple tests without an expensive separate RF generator. In the photo you can see I have set it to generate an RF carrier at the input to a directional coupler(not included) and I am measuring the spectrum at the other port at the same time. Not suffering from the yellowish plastic tint of other earlier Advantest units and is in pristine, as new shape. It has better performance and more functions than AGILENT 8563EC. You can see 50Hz noise sidebands 90dB down on a microwave signal; try doing this with most other spectrum analyzers! This model is specified to 26.5GHz and overranges all the way up to 31.8GHz. It is very well built and has no known flaws. Do not confuse it with the much less performing units widely sold here on eBay. This is a high end spectrum analyzer with top notch firmware and excellent RF performance. The IF resolution bandwidth goes from 1Hz to 10MHz with fast sweep times.
