RARE USAF BASIC PARACHUTE BADGE BY MEYER. Up for bid is an original U.S. Air Force Basic Parachute Badge. In 1956 the USAF designed and officially issued their own parachute badges but were not popular with the troops and went back to the US Army style wings in 1964. The USAF badges were made in two different"types" The type 1 badge was vaulted(curved) and had 9 lines on the parachute and were only made for about two years. The type 2 badges were flat and had 7 lines on the parachute. Both types were made in base metal and in sterling silver. The sterling ones being far harder to find and sterling type 1 badges considered rare. This badge is a type 2 made by N.S. Meyer. It is a clutchback with nice straight pins, never being bent over or crushed and measures approximately 1 1/4" x 9/16" It is marked STERLING N.S. MEYER ... moreINC. NEW YORK and has both the MEYER SHIELD and the 9M CONTRACT SHIELD. The enamel is undamaged. An hard to find badge. Ple ase examine pictures closely as they are considered part of the description. Size: 2 13/16 inch wingspan Both original flat brass clutchbacks function as intended. No Metal content is marked. The Badge appears to be Sterling. In the case of Meyer. We are 100% at best, it is silver filled and without a silver mark, it is not sterling. I assume it is Silver Filled with a Rhodium front side protective coat. The front is just about perfect. With a 2 inch opening Signed with the Newcomb College N inside C mark. Joseph Fortune Meyer's JM mark. And an additional mark that looks like a"J" or a"T J" mark- this probably indicates the clay and glaze. But it does not match ex actly marks that I have found. This piece is a vellum glaze on white clay. It also features the distinctive ... moremark of noted Newcomb College Decorator May Louise Dunn.
