Vintage BRASS Horseshoe Protractor, rare item
This vintage horseshoe protractor is made of solid brass and was among my Dad's stuff when he passed in New Mexico. I didn't know what it was until now. Primarily it is used by a Farrier to measure the angle of the shoe to the horse's hoof. It measures 6" x 4 1/2" x 2 3/4" high. I don't know what a person would use this for other than shoeing a horse. Maybe a"show and tell" item or a paper weight? Was made in Japan but when I was over there I didn't see too many horses!

It belonged to my father who was an engineer and draughtsman in the aeronautical industry for many years from 1935- it is possible if may have been passed down to him from his father although I think probably not. The 2p coin in the photograph hopefully gives you some idea of its size but the box measures approximately 33.5cm square and 3cm in depth. The diameter of the protractor is approximately 30cm. When inspected closely there are a couple of areas where the protractor is marked and there are a couple of scratches on the box but overall I would say it is in extremely good condition. Particularly in consideration of its likely age. I would guess that the protractor is probably made from brass- it weighs ... moreapproximately 678g alone and 2280g when in its box. This rule measures almost 7 inches long(with measuring scales for 6 inches) and 7/8ths wide. This is unusually double-sided. It's also unusual in being a French-issued rule that measures entirely in English Imperial measurements. The top surface carries a 6 inch panel scale. Each panel 1" wide, with the first inch further divided into 10ths. This surface is marked"Anglais" The reverse surface carries a similar arrangement- but this time there are 12 panels, each measuring 1/2" The first panel is also sub-divided into 10ths. SCROLL DOWN FOR PICTURES! This auction is for a H Hughes& Son London Brass Station Pointer. Number 3547. It comes with its original box. The Station Pointer is about 18" long. Good working order. Original. Uncleaned condition. The box is original. And a bit rough. The instrument is used for coastal navigation using a sextant and was invented in 1801 by Joseph Huddart. A U.S. naval captain. This instrument, also referred to as a three-arm protractor, is composed of a circular scale connected to three arms. The center arm is fixed, while the outer two can be adjusted to an angle previously measured with a sextant. In coastal navigation the vessel's coordinates can be established by measuring two horizontal angles between three coastal objects. After setting the legs of the station pointer to these angles(adjustment is done with ... moretwo drum micrometers) it can be laid on a map showing the same objects. Description VERY RARE 1820 OX BONE 4 1/2 INCH PROTRACTOR SCALE RULE FROM A GENTLEMAN'S ETUI BY JOHN JONES. CROWN COURT, SOHO SUCCESSOR TO ALEXANDER WELLINGTON Superb condition Early Georgian protractor scale rule 10 scales Tiny 4 1/2 inch size- originally from a gentleman's small etui set A very neat little protractor scale rule in great condition. Dating from around 1820 and made by John Jones IV, Soho, London. This is tiny- at just 4 1/2 inches long and 1 3/8ths wide. The small size indicates it almost certainly came from a Gentleman's Etui set of drawing materials- perhaps all made by Jones. The top surface has 4 proportioning scales for 1/4. 1/2, 3/4 and Inch. On the reverse. This rule has 6 more scales. It also has the classic lower panel- in this case a 4 inch scale made up of 15 sections- divided into 1/4 inches and 1/2 ... moreinches. The first 1/2 inch and last 1/4 inch are sub-divided into finely graduated 10ths. The rule is marked"JONES LATE WELLINGTON CROWN COURT SOHO LONDON" John Jones worked in London for just 10 years from 1817 to 1827. He was at the Crown Court. Soho address on this rule from 1817 to 1822. Along with Laban Cook, he was the successor to Alexander Wellington, the highly regarded rule maker, and purportedly the first ever manufacturer of Joshua Routledge's 2/2 engineer's rule. Condition: Great for age. Very few signs of wear. Check the supersize pictures for condition. One very small chip to one corner& one or two stains- otherwise perfect. For sale is a antique drafting divider set with ink attachments. Lead attachment and original porcelain ink dish. The dividers appear to be brass or bronze and measure about 5" or 128mm. The ink attachments tips are not brass, most likely steel since they have surface corrosion. Protactor is original to the set and is also brass. The box latch pin is bent and box cover is worn. Everything else is in great condition, best guess is the set is from the late 1800 or early 1900. No markings on any of the pieces. See photos
