Antique/Vintage Leupold & Stevens Surveying Instrument HG US ARMY Height Gauge
I have no idea what this or what it has to do with surveying but it looks to be in great condition. It is like a machinist height gauge to me. Tag on equipment and the box both say it a surveying instrument HG and the serial number is 40. Stands 28 3/8 tall. Case is roughly 29 1/2" by 10" deep by 8" tall. The base is very heavy and must be removed for the scaled part to set in the box. I see no way to securely lock the base into the storage box so am not going to put it in it for shipping. I think the scale is in millimeters is it isn't in inches. Case has some chipping but is sound. Leather strapping is old and decent. I don't have a key for the locks. Fowler Cathetometer, for Height Gauge, Gage, Optical no Contact Measuring, Wow!
Fowler Cathetometer. Apparently clamps into most height gauges to replace the scriber and provides an optical sighting method of measuring features(has internal cross hairs) In the pic's, you can see the tongue coming off to the side; this is what clamps into your height gauge. The unit has a couple of focus adjustments, one for the cross hair clarity, and the other for focusing on the object being measured. Also appears to have a horizontal adjustment(has built in spirit level) Clean and smooth however: the machinist who used this last told me that one of the focus adjustments(probably the one that focuses on the object) can go right off the end of it's internal rack and pinion and you need to take it apart to get it re-engaged. Apparently not a problem under normal use but if you inadvertently crank it to one end. You may need to ... moremake it good again. The box is a bit off, lid seems slightly skewed but really not too bad overall. Also the unit will not fit into the box unless the focus is adjusted so as to retract its overall length. Could be exceptionally handy for measuring those oddly shaped items to which a normal height gauge just can't get close enough! Only Scale-Tronix scales automatically return to zero. You may even turn the 5002 on after the patient is on it and get a correct weight. A paper-tape printer automatically prints outpatient weight providing a permanent. Accurate record. The 5002 weighs patients without zeroing in between. It’s the only stand-on scale that automatically returns to zero allowing you to weigh a continuous stream of patients.
