Toolmakers Shop Made Master Precision Level 8" .0005" in 10" 10 second
Took a chance and picked this up at a shop sale. Turned out the vial is accurate to 10 seconds of arc. The base is mild steel. Unhardened and originally it was sort of cobbled together using two studs and a nut on either side of the vial holder. Tore them apart. Bead blasted the rusty mounting base and added a spherical washer setup to one side of the vial. Then. I hand scraped the working surface to about 5-10 bearing points per inch and laser etched the sensitivity on the base. I got four of these and only need one or two so here is the deal. These are not Starrett or Moore& Wright. They are shop made and were refurbished by me. I want you to be an informed buyer so h ere is what I know: 8" length 7/8" square. Using a feeler gage I estimate the sensitivity at right around 10 seconds(0005" in ten inches) I adjusted the ... morevials for zero zero on my surface plate and a turn around test shows repeatability to less that 1/4 or 1/3 division. What I cannot attest to is the linearity of the vials but it will still be perfectly usable for comparison tests and machine leveling. I do not know how stable mild steel is in comparison to good quality cast iron but I scraped the base surface to 5-10 points and then spotted it again after re-installing the vial as well as 3 or 4 days later and the contact pattern remained the same. I do not feel that $49 is bad considering about 2 hours of hand scraping on the base. The level will be well packaged and shipped insured. I have an 9" one of these for sale as well.

1597. Vintage/Antique Keuffel & Esser Precision Sighting Level and Tripod
This is a vintage/antique Keuffel& Esser Co. Transit/level and Tripod. The transit is in a wooden case.The case is missing part of the top but the hinges are still there. The tripod legs are wooden. The legs are painted orange and white but the paint is fading. The serial or ID number on the case is 194597. It was made in the USA. The transit has the same number on it. The transit/level is 19" long and the tube is 1 3/4" in Diameter. which quite a bit bigger than most of the transit/levels that I have seen. It has a cover for the front lens and a sun shade for it. It has some chipping in the paint but it is in otherwise good condition. All the adjusting and locking knobs work on it. Being much bigger like it is it seems like it would be more accurate when setting it up. It is solid brass under the paint. The tripod is 40 inches ... moretall when folded up. There are some washers and a sheet metal wrench shown in the picture that will not go with this transit as they don't fit anything on it. I realized I should have gotten a shot of the bottom, so I'll do that tomorrow(5/2) Everything works perfectly and smoothly as intended except the vial for vertical measurement. Which cracked and is not functional. As I mentioned in the condition, the main two(horizontal) vials work perfectly, and most machinist levels don't even have the vertical one, so it's probably not a big deal, but it may be an easy fix if desired.
