Hello and welcome to the auction and thank you for viewing.This is for a group of 13 old hooks.They all appear to be black japanned.Nine have tapered shanks and to the other four the shank appears constant.The largest hook measures a little over 5.5cm. from the tip of the shank to the bend and is for a salmon fly and equal to about a 6/0.The other 12 hooks measure from 2.4cm. for the largest and 1.1cm. for the smallest.This measurement again from the tip of the shank to the bend.I don't know where the largest hook came from but the smaller hooks as far as I aware came from some very old.Unused hooks that were sent to me at least 9 years ago. The largest hook has some red paint or similar to the bend area.The other hooks are all unused and in excellent condition. Vintage Fly Wallet With Salmon/Trout Hooks For Fly Rod And Fly Reel
Up for your consideration. I have a vintage leather fly wallet developed in 1877 by"Major" Wakeman Holberton. Born in N.Y. City in 1839, he was educated in N.Y. and Europe. During the civil war he fought as a member of the"Sickles Brigade" After the war ended, he took up sketching and painting fishing/hunting subjects. Major" Holberton, at one time was ranked as the best of American Fly-casters. He made several journeys to Newfoundland and Labrador to hunt caribou and he fished in most every famous trout streams/lakes in America. He was also a N.Y. tackle dealer( Sportsman's Emperium) selling top of the line hunting, fishing, camping equipment etc. He married the daughter of Thomas S. Cummings an artist, with whom he had two sons. He died in Hackensack, N.J. in 1898. As you can see from two of the photos, he was ... morean accomplished artist! He was also an Author and in 1887 wrote"The Book Of Angling" How And where To catch Fish. This fly wallet contains 35 hooks and three gut leaders. The leather seems soft and pliable not brittle. All the hooks with the exception of three are in very good condition! It appears that the three hooks in question, were used to tied a fly. There are also( 6) single wire barbless hooks that were patented( pat. 196648) in Oct. 30, 1887 by Mr. Butler Edgar. Hooks size range from#1 thru 1/0 and 6/0 on the Edgar's.
