Weston Model 14 Portable Galvanometer, 2uA per division, circa 1920
I've had this meter in my collection since about 1970. In 1996 I wrote to the company that acquired Weston Instruments' portable line” asking for information about this meter. In reply. I received two photocopies of pages from the 1923 catalog. These photocopies may be seen in the photo gallery and will accompany the meter. In a recent search. I found Google has archived a scan of the 1920 periodical“Electrical World” Volume 76, Number 3) An ad for Weston Instruments appears on page 108. You can see the Model 14 in the lower left-hand corner. On the meter's face. It says“Res 251Ω” I measured the sensitivity of the unit at about 2 micro-amperes per division. This agrees with the catalog information that specifies the galvanometer with 250-ohm resistance has a sensitivity of 2x10-6 amperes per millimeter. They were all purchased or given to my grandfather who was a very avid collector of all things radio. It may be from cars, military, fire, police, and personal use. He grew up in the depression and had a love for radios when he was a child. So much of a love that he began his own two way communications business in Connecticut which turned into being one of the largest in the North East. When he wasn't running his company he was a local disc jockey, HAM radio operator, and a classic radio, car, and firetruck restorer. He took very good care of all of his radios and enjoyed selling them to people who were as passionate about them as he was. Awesome piece of tech history. A Weston Model 1. D.C. Millivoltmeter with velvet lined leather case, original calibration card and key for lock. Meter is in fantastic shape, no cracks or chips in plastic case, no cracks in lenses. Leather case is in great shape, but does show a little wear. I took high resolution pictures of all sides so you could review for yourself. Someone clearly took care of it all these years. The words"Touch tone dials DC- Millivoltmeter 20/50/100/200 range#65372" have been carefully engraved in the front flap of the leather case lid in cursive. A white stamp with the words"TOUCH_TONE DIALS" is also on the front flap of the case. Card shows the unit was tested at the factory on June 16. 1961. Front of meter is marked"Weston INSTS. DIV. OF DAYSTROM, INC. NEWARK, N.J. U.S.A. I do not know if ... morethis meter works. I bought it as a display piece and have never used it as a meter. Measured from the back- approximately 7 3/4" across. 6 1/4" high, 1 5/8" deep. Posts measure 3 1/2" with bolt and washer on base of each and tightening bolts on tops. From the estate of a local collector of radio. Telephone, telegraph, etc. Everything that came from this estate has been good and in working order and I have no reason to believe this is any different. Here is a RARE large vintage/antique WESTON Ammeter. Model 156 number 51454. The newest patent date is 1913. This is in great condition.REALLY great condition! There is no rust and very little paint loss. The posts are still on the back. I don't have a way to test this because but I would not doubt for a minute that this thing works. The meter is 6 3/4" in diameter. You just do not find these in this good of condition very often. I have a couple of these and both are in the same great condition and same model, but the other one is number 51452. I'm sure they were a matching pair when they were used. This is a very old. Classic Weston tachometer or indicator which measures 0 to 2000 RPM. It was distributed by The Electric Tachometer Company of Philadelpia, PA but made by The Weston Electrical Instrument Company of Newark, NJ. The front plaque lists various patents dating from late 1894 to 1901 and the serial number 26482. This unit has not been tested or calibrated. So it comes as is. The glass window has a small chip on the upper right hand side(just left of 1500) with light debris inside. The black metal casing has surface wear/patina expected for its age. This is an original vintage light meter that was used in commercial/industrial applications. It works very well as can be seen in the photos and the needle is surprisingly responsive to even small changes in the level of ambient light. I am not sure when this was made but I believe it is 1940's vintage. Includes the original box.
