Old Estate Find. This vintage portable watthour meter is 6 ½ tall x 5 ½ wide x 5 ¼ deep. It has an outlet on the side to plug in a device and a knife switch on the front. The dial on the front has a face that reads zero to twenty kilowatt hours with SANGAMO logo with arrow indicator and power wheel. Dial glass has been replaced with a thin sheet of plastic some time in the past. It has some tears in it. Top handle is missing. Painted white some time in the distant past also. I did not attempt to plug in and test. Cord is old and frayed. Knife switch does move up and down. Interior looks clean. Power wheel does turn by hand. Up for bid is a very nice Sangamo Type JA watthour meter.It is a 120 volt. 5 amp, 2 wire unit.These meters were built from 1940-1954.my serial number log shows this unit was built in late 1941.In 1940,the HFS and HFA meters were replaced by the JA and JS meters.the basic concepts behind the HFS and HFA meters were retained and updated.Initially,these meters were to be produced with chrome steel magnets, but just prior to production, these magnet assemblies were replaced with the new alnico magnets.The steel base on the HFS(which was prone to rusting out) was replaced with an aluminium base on the JS. The meter is in very good condition.the glass cover has little to no scratches and is still sealed in place by the original lead seal.I have never broken this seal and the buyer will recieve it still sealed.The wireway cover is attached.The interior ... morelooks like new and is very clean and bright. the tag is very clean and readable and has the utility company's serial number plate attached.The paint is in good condition but could stand a good cleaning.This meter will make a nice addition to a vintage meter collection or may be used for some other project if desired. Up for bid is a nice vintage Sangamo Type HFA watthour meter.It is a 115 volt.5 amp,2 wire unit.These meters were built from 1934-1940.My serial number log shows this unit was built in late 1937.With the standardization of meters in 1934,The HC element was incorporated into the newly standardized housing.In addition to socket(HFS) and A-base(HFA) versions,two other versions were produced: The HFB and HFC.The HFB had a special 2-part terminal block that allowed testing of the meter in place, and the HFC has the HFB terminal block in an enclosure for outside mounting of the meter. Of the later versions,GE was the only other company to make similar models: The I-20B and I-20C. Vintage 1940'S PREPAYMENT { COIN OPERATED } HOME METER BOX / SANGAMO TYPE SM 3
FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION is a Vintage 1940's SANGAMO{ COIN OPERATED} PREPAYMENT METER TYPE SM 3. A Very Rugged and Durable Meter Box MADE IN CANADA by the SANGAMO COMPANY. LIMITED out of TORONTO, CANADA. This Particular Meter came from a Residence in Perth-Andover. New Brunswick, Canada. My Grandfather, who worked for the town power commission, salvaged it when these meters were being phased out and replaced with the style we are all now familiar with. He claimed that it was working when he removed it from service. I am not sure exactly just when that was, but I am fairly certain that it was in the 1950's. There is a red"SEAL" on the side that is DATED 1948. I believe these seals were applied to the meters when initially hooked up, and perhaps again whenever the meter was serviced or inspected. Since the time it was removed ... morefrom service it has hung in my grandfather's garage.at least 60 years. The meter worked like a Pay Telephone or Child's Amusement Ride. The Homeowner would put quarters in to receive power. How long the Quarter lasted depended on what the Homeowner was using the power for. If the Homeowner was using electrical appliances the quarter may only last three or four hours. If only lights. The quarter would last all night. The Quarter is placed in a coin slot on the top. The black knob is pressed in, the meter is activated and the quarter falls into a collection box. The collection box was secured first with a nut and then a padlock. The collection box is found at the lower right with a black placard riveted to the front of it. This meter is UNTESTED. A Licensed Master Electrician I talked to with 30 years of experience told me that he was very confidant that it would work just fine.

I believe that this thermometer was produced as an advertising item by the Sangamo Electric Company in Springfield Illinois. The thermometer has been cleverly and attractively mounted on sold oak to resemble a working electrical meter. The thermometer works great and the small"meters" are only for affect. The piece is ready to hang and measures about 7-1/4" x 4-1/4" The glass dome over the thermometer stands about 2" tall x 2-1/2" in diameter.
