Up for auction is a very rare and antique softcover Victorian work on marriage for women. Entitled ABOUT WOMAN. LOVE and MARRIAGE. By F. Saunders, Author of Salad for the Solitary and Social. Published in New York by G.W. Carleton in 1874. 319 pages plus four pages of ads in rear. A scarce title on marriage. Written for American women just after the Civil War. The book is divided into four sections: Concerning Celibacy, The Ruling Passion, Wedded Life, and Modern Impediments to Marriage. Also a lengthy appendix in the rear, seemingly adding new material from a previous publication, and seemingly mostly concerned with divorce(and the condemning of it. The copyright date on the copyright page is 1868, so this is most likely an unstated second edition. Book itself is rare in any form, but the fact that this softcover work has survived ... morethe last 139-years in its original color wraps is unusual. Softcover works published prior to 1890 are typically scarce. And this may be the only copy of this softcover Victorian marriage manual to survive intact. Hardcover copies can be located, but they lack the attractive blue wraps with the cameo image of a Victorian lady in profile on the front cover. Rear wrap advertises Charles Dickens Works published by Carleton. Other advertisements inside front and rear covers. Book is in FAIR condition, with pieces of paper at head and foot of spine absent, but most of title still legible. Brass edged Bookpress in nice used condition. Dimensions: Overall is 15" w x 10" d x 1 3/4" high(not including bolts) Dimensions in between bolts are 12 1/2" side to side. 7 1/2" front to back. Constructed of 3/4" thick 5 ply plywood. Bolts are 3/8" diameter x 5 3/8" tall with wingnuts. There are a few scuffs and divets on the top. Antique 1800's Cast Iron Book Binding Nipping Copy Press Collectible Nice Detail
You are bidding on an Exceptional antique Book Binding Press. Copy Press or"nipping press. In cast iron with some of the original ornate decorative gold and green paint intact. This model appears to be rare in size and style. This press has not been re-touched- what you see is the original condition. We barely dusted with a soft cloth to help show detail. The top plate measures 10 1/4" x 13 1/16" The bottom pressing area is 13 5/8" x 15 1/2" The press opening is 2 5/8" It is in excellent working condition. And there is no structural damage. The hand crank turns smoothly and easily- the plate presses extremely tight. There is some surface chipping to the paint and on the inner surface between plates- as seen in the photographs. The brass nut on top of the hand crank does not appear original& one of the guide ... moretabs is missing from the top plate. This does not affect the smooth openining and closing of the press. Nor does it affect the tightness of it's closure. I am not an expert in book binding equipment, but am happy to answer questions. 1907 POETRY of ROBERT BURNS Book SCOTTISH ART NOUVEAU Leather BINDING Antique
Up for auction is a Scottish Art Nouveau-bound edition of the POETICAL WORKS OF ROBERT BURNS. With LIFE AND NOTES BY WILLIAM WALLACE, LL.D. with Twenty-One Illustrations from Original Drawings by W.D. McKay, C. Martin Hardie, G.O. Reid, etc. Published in London and Edinburgh by W. R. Chambers in 1907. 553 pages. A solid and attractive copy of a 106-year old Burns collection. Made particularly attractive by the three-quarter leather over marbled boards binding, which features Scottish Art Nouveau design motifs stamped in gilt on the spine. Top page edge gilded as well. Binding dated Edinburgh, 1902, which means it must have been an earlier binding later affixed to a later printing of the Works. Leather scuffed at extremities, but all holding together and book in VERY GOOD condition overall. Good luck! Powered by
