Bookbinding: Scharf-Fix Leather Paring Tool
I offer for auction my Scharf-Fix Paring machine. Which is a manual machine and pretty simple to use having only two adjustments by turning a knob. One knob sets the gap through which the leather passes. For different thicknesses of leather. The other knob is to adjust the angle of the blade. I haven't used the machine for about three years as I was taught to use a paring knife correctly and never went back. As I wanted to practice the skill of paring and become adept. I found that it is a skill of hand paring needs many hours of practice and must be used regularly, but I understand that a lot of people do not like using very sharp knives and this machine makes paring a simple and safe exercise. The machine is not large or heavy. But is well made and has a screw-clamp to attach it on the side of the work desk. Very fine work can be done ... morewith this piece of equipment and it is a well tried and tested. A search on the internet will find numerous articles on using the equipment and many stockists. Unfortunately I recently moved out of my bindery and cannot find the handbook or spare rollers as my equipment is all in boxes apart from my working tools. But I am sure a pdf. of the manual and spares are available. The only main spares necessary are the blades and they are inexpensive. It is always a good idea to have a stock as blunt blades can ruin your leather.

The item for sale is a bookbinding finishing tool- the agate head tip is approx. 30mm wide- and overall is approx. 370mm long inc the handle. There is a tiny hairline seen to one side of the agate- the agate tip is not loose and looks to be whipped in place with tape over the whipping. The brass barrel does have some knocks and dents. On the 30th of May 1832 John Paas, a manufacturer of brasses involved in the book binding industry, called at the workshop of James Cook, a book binder in Leicester. Cook was in debt to Paas for the sum of £25 and though some of that money was paid during the visit, Cook informed Paas that ... morehe would have to return in the evening, when the remaining debt would be settled. Accordingly Paas went back to the workshop on Wellington Street later on, arriving some time after six.
