RARE WWI Aviation BOOK Privately Published Pilot Letters 1920 Beautiful Binding!
This privately published book is a compilation of letters sent to family members by one Arthur Richmond Taber. Arthur served in WWI but did not come home alive. Of greatest interest are the letters he mailed while a member of the American Flying Corps. It would appear that Arthur did not die in combat but rather in the first months of 1919 while still on active duty. The covers of this book are lovely and the pages are white and clean. The Taber family was loaded so it's not surprising that this memorial to their pilot son was first class. There's a little cover pull and some cracking inside the front cover along the spine. This unique old book binder's tool was for holding typeface and then gently heated to impress gold gilded titles on book bindings. Quite unusual and hard to find! Measures 10" across and works smoothly. The heavy brass has not been cleaned up and retains its time-gathered patina. Nice wooden handle that has some scorching from being too close to the flame when heated. Overall a very nice tool in its original state of preservation.

Up for auction is a rare 1744 edition of the comedies of the Roman playwright and former slave. The African-born Terence, bound in vellum or parchment, and published in Venice, entitled PUBLII TERENTII AFRI COMOEDIAE SEX Cum Notis Joh. Minelli. Published by Nicolaum(Nicholas) Pezzana in Venice in 1744. 540 pages plus a lengthy unpaginated index in the rear. A handsome 18th century edition of Terence's popular Latin comedies. Terence was a Roman playwright who was born in North Africa to an enslaved mother. And was later purchased by a Roman Senator and brought to Rome. There, the Senator became so impressed with Terence’s intellect that he gave him his freedom. Terence wrote six plays between 166 B.C. and 160 B.C. and all six have survived to the present day. At the age of 25. Terence left Rome, never to return, and some classical scholars ... moreclaimed he died at sea. He is thought to have been of Libyan descent, and is considered one of the first African writers. We have another one of the very rare Mettlach steins that was made in 1891. This stein has the mold number 2001 H is marked 1/2L and 7 1/2” tall to the top of the lid. The design as seen in the pictures is very elaborate with book bindings on the subject of Forestry. There are hairlines in the bottom in the shape of a spider and some pink staining. The pewter lid has a hiking motif which seems fitting to the subject of forestry. Normally you would find a lid with an owl thumblift. This is a good quality old lid that looks great. HIDDEN BOOK SAFE c1790 Smuggling Case CUT OUT BOOK French LEATHER Fine Binding
This is a pair of original finely bound leather books from c1790. The top book named Histoire Naturelle Des Serpens, printed in Paris. The rear book can only be ID'd by its spine title, as shown in pics. Gilt still visible on rear board, the front board with heavier rounding and wear, well rubbed with the front board as well as EP/title page detached. A small portion of the title page and EP have been torn away as well. The edges of the books are notably worn. Unmarked. Page edges red. The books themselves aren't actually books any longer, rather now they are adhered together and dually hollowed out after the first few pages of the top book, to make a hidden smuggling case to carry illegal or stolen contraband or hidden book safe to store some things of importance.
