EX RARE Ornate Antique 1894 Seneca Iroquois Ash Basket, Damaged
A member of the Seneca tribe in New York wove this beautiful and elaborately decorated basket out of ash splints in 1894. This basket has an old paper label pasted to the under side of its lid which identifies the basket’s year of creation. This label also confirms that the basket’s weaver came from the Allegheny River Reservation. To my great sadness. This basket is in fairly fragile condition overall and has several areas of damage, all of which are shown in detail in the pictures that form part of this listing. However, the ash splints which make up the basket’s basic body and lid are still sound(not friable or flaking) and the curlwork on the basket’s lid is stable as well. This basket needs to be displayed- as I have done- in a reasonably climate-controlled environment, away from direct sunlight, smoke, and other elements that might ... morecause further deterioration to the ash weavers which comprise the intricate decorative elements on the basket’s sides and bottom. I would love it if this amazing piece were to be bid on by a museum or a basket conservator! Despite the damage which age and previous. Improper care and storage have done to this basket, the beauty and complexity of its ornamentation make it a precious and rare example of early Seneca basketry art. Many of these are broken near the top and could simply be retipped and fished with. Some are broken further down near the handle and are good for parts only. Some of these rods have never been used and still have the original plastic on the handles and the Fuji tags still on the guides. HED3 trispoke wheel front. DAMAGED****
This wheel was damaged byba pothole. It is slightly un true. As you can see in the pictures there is a significant crack in the top layer of carbon. Also a dent has formed because the carbon flexed in the impact. The wheel does not have a flatspot just out of true. I still rode this wheel on my commuter bike. Its just sitting around now and I have no use for it. If you have any questions please ask.
