HP Z3801A 10 MHz GPS Disciplined Frequency Standard- HAM Here's a nice 10 MHz frequency standard that is having a problem. The instrument does not give a GPS"Lock" signal. And the oscillator, while very accurate and stable, is not locked to the GPS 10 MHz signal. The Z3801A uses a Motorola"Oncore" GPS receiver. As I have other GPS standards that use the Oncore. I removed this one and placed it in one of the other standards. It performed properly, giving a GPS lock within a a few minutes of power-up. I returned it to the Z3801A where the same symptoms persisted. The Z3801A may not obtain lock, but the problem is not the Motorola receiver- it is good. The oscillator. An oven type, is very accurate and stable, even without discipline. As I have other GPS units, I was able to accurately measure the frequency offset- one ... morecycle per 20 seconds, or 5 x 10 e-9, after only a few minutes of warm-up. The unit has a DC power supply installed internally by a previous owner. Who also had the 10 MHz output routed to the front panel. I returned the output connection to the rear and plugged the hole. You can return it to the front if you wish. The internal jumpers, originally set for RS-422 have been re-set for RS-232 communication. The instrument ships with a new power cord and a CD containing the Z3801A User's Guide, HP's SatStat control program, and much more information regarding using and modifying the Z-3801A for use in your"shack. I rather suspect the problem may be with the set-up. As the internal fault lights show normal operation and there is no alarm light on the front panel. But I'm unable to get the SatStat control program to run on my WIN7 computer. It requires XP or XP emulation. If you are handy with a soldering iron. Or maybe just able to run the SatStat program, you may have a working GPS disciplined standard. Lucent RFTG GPS Disciplined 10 MHz Frequency Standard(GPSDO) HAM This is the frequency disciplining section of a Lucent RFTG frequency standard. The RFTG consists of both an ovenized crystal oscillator(OXCO) which is disciplined by a GPS receiver and associated circuitry. And a separate rubidium oscillator, which is also disciplined by control from the OXCO. The system is redundant, and both the OXCO and the rubidium oscillator sections are capable of being operated independently. From the exterior they both look alike, but only the OXCO has independent GPS capability. I prefer the OXCO as a standard over the rubidium unit for two reasons: 1) The stand-alone rubidium unit must be periodically calibrated. The OXCO is self-calibrating by locking to the cesium beam standards of the GPS system. 2) The rubidium unit will eventually"wear out" ... moredue to gradual failure of the excitation lamp. The OXCO will last indefinitely. Even if left on continuously- which is the preferred mode of operation. This standard has been fitted with its own lock indicator and power supply. And is extremely simple to use. There are no switches or controls, just a red/green LED to show GPS lock status and a 10 MHz output port on the front. An antenna connection and a power input are on the rear. There is no on/off switch, as the unit is intended to operate continuously for maximum accuracy. The GPS receiver and antenna power supply are shown(unconnected) at the top in the fourth photo, attached to the removable bottom of the standard. This receiver and antenna connection are not present in the rubidium version. Output is approximately 4 volts P-P of clean sine wave output into an open circuit as shown in the second photo. And half that value when terminated into a 50 ohm impedance. A new power supply and"starter" antenna are included. However, the receiver should have a standard mast-mounted antenna for best operation. They are available at modest cost here on eBay. About $30 will get you a new(5 volt) one if you shop. I'

And is capable of being disciplined via an external voltage. The unit is manufactured by Piezo as their model 2920136, and both are used interchangeably in the frequency standards manufactured by Lucent for Tel-Com use. Although the Piezo data sheet I have(photo 4) shows operation at +12 V. Lucent and others run them at +24 V in their Tel-Com equipment, and this seems to be most common except for portable operation.
