Here we have a very special machine. One that has fixed/created many types of clothing and projects that needed a thread to hold it all together. It kept going. And still does. Been in my family for 50+ years. This used to belong to my grandmother. She was always handy and eager to help in what we needed done. From curtains, to repairs, halloween costumes. She really was a lifesaver. She worked in a garment factory. And was either given the machine, or she purchased it upon leaving. All I know is it's been with us all these years. She had it before I was born. Sorry for the short story, but im just wanting to let any person who may be interested, to know it's history. It was well cared for, grams was very neat and tidy. Used on occasion. I cannot say how many years it was used in an actual business/factory setting. The only damage(if ... moreyou want to call it that) im aware of is to the power cable insulation. The covering that holds the wire inside of it. Protects it. Shrink wrap may come in handy here. I have no other way of stating any wear on or to it, as I have no experience on these machines. Oh, and the machine probably made it's way from the New York area. It is now located in California. Now some history on the company. Union Special was known to be one of the best in the business. They made a variety of machines and many are still in use today. The company closed production in 1989. From what i've read, and the ones left were grabbed up quickly. There is still a website up in their name, so the company im figuring is still around. Early antique WESTERN UNION hand crank sewing machine wooden case flowers rare
An antique hand crank sewing machine in floral decorated wooden case. The machine bearing the serial number 1804567. There are remnants of the words"Western Union" visible on both sides of the machine(please see photos- not sure if it was a sticker or just worn off paint) and it is our understanding that Western Union(the telegraph industry Western Union) offered machines at some point in time, but they seem to be rare to find as we cannot find another one comparable. Also due to the lack of information we have found we really can't date it with any certain accuracy but would estimate circa 1900 or a touch earlier. The case measures just shy of 13" tall, about 18.5" long, and just shy of 10" wide. There is allover surface wear commensurate with age and use. There is significant loss to the black and floral paint ... moreon the machine, and there is a split to the wood on one side of the case(please see photos) We do not have the key to the case and the lid does not line up perfectly with the latch where it locks- it looks like it just needs a little manipulation but not sure. The arm moved up and down when the wheel is turned. Please view the images as an extension of the description. As they are part of the description and they are of the actual item you will receive. Many of them focused on sewing but I am now visually impaired and can no longer do crafts. For auction is one of my large machine oil cans from my collection. It is 5" tall and 3-1/2" diameter at the base. On opposite sides of its screw-on lid are the words"UNION" and"SPECIAL" I believe it is covered with bronze-colored paint. Can is empty and clean.
