Antique Wood Roll Top Lap Desk, Travel Writing Slope Box w Drawer, Nice Patina
Beautiful Antique Roll Top Lap Desk. Writing Slope Up for your consideration is this truly beautiful antique lap desk. Made of wood. I am uncertain of the actual type of wood but has nice graining. This is just great in every way, it is intact and very secure when completely shut and when you pull out the drawer at the front, it will open the roll top portion in the back to expose a three section area inside. Once the roll top is open, you can unfold the desk portion which flips open from back to front and leans securely on the open drawer for stability, the desk has a purple or a worn blue felt top with brass hinges. Again, the wood is very nice inside and out, the drawer opens nicely as does the roll top portion. There is a large transfer decoration on the wood desk top, there is also the very slight remains of one on the top of the roll ... moretop framed area. There are only two areas with minor problems, first is the lower right corner which is missing a small corner wood piece, and the upper left corner of the framing of the roll top where there is also a small piece of wood missing; otherwise, working very well and looking very good. There is a brass lock in place for the drawer but no key and the hinges are brass as well and seem to be original. It measures 12 1/8" wide, 9 1/4" deep, 5 1/2" tall. It is very clean, no major breaks, cracks, or discoloration. Nice patina, nice scroll design in wood at the top roll top framing, transfer decoration is wearing and almost gone on the top portion, and of course, the two missing pieces mentioned earlier. This is an oak wood. Desk accessory for writing pens and ink wells made in England around 90 years ago. The finish is original and the beading is intact. The underside has 4 ball feet. This Attractive writing desk is made out of solid wood, and it has a Victorian style medium/dark red/brown stain finish color that makes it look like Mahogany but it is definitely a hard wood that looks more like OAK to me. There is a slight curve to the front to the drawer sides which adds a very nice flair. The top is solid wood, not veneer. It is in it’s original condition so there are scratches on the desktop due to normal everyday wear. There is a Decorative edge that has been added to the edge of the top that may not have been original. This auction is for a primitive country school set. Appears to be handmade of all wood. The desk measures 10.5 inches from front to back X 9.25 inches from side to side X 11.75 inches tall. The seat and top of desk are painted country blue with sanded edges. The frame is stained. The desk top has a tiny yellow heart painted onto it with a hole through it. The desk seat has a wooden heart painted red on it. The letters measure approx 3.25 tall and are hand painted. The books are painted and tied together with twine; there is a red apple on top of them. The whole thing is in great shape with many little compartments. Including mail holders and a drawer. Folds out into three pieces. The wood is beautiful and I think it is hickory- not sure about that. Measures 10 3/8" wide- 9" deep and stands 3 5/8" high. Whomever made this was quite a craftsman. Weighs 5 pounds before packing. This is a great phone as well as a conversation piece! Tested and in excellent working condition. Rings nicely. Connection is clear. Dated 1979. Dial and handset are both brown. 1930's vintage E. Ingraham electric clock. Model SSD2 Hour strike Self-starting clock runs good. Keeps accurate time. Motor makes a soft purring noise while running. Strikes a small brass bell inside once every half hour and at each hour strikes counting out that hour. Unique deco style design wooden case with stepped side panels setting on two feet at a slat back for easy viewing at your desk. Original finish good. Little aging, very few tiny blemishes, slim thin veneer repair at left lower side. The silvery-pearly white dial face is clean. But scratch line at the left from 8 to 10, hand was rubbibg but not now. Black numbers and hands with a brass smooth-sweep seconds hand, good rounded rectangular convex dial glass clean, no cracks nor scratches, brass looking sash. May be gold plated as in many Ingraham clocks of the era. Original ... moremetal label on the back metal cover. Model SSD2. The large knob at the back right turns counterclockwise to set the time. At the left center you see another hole with a shaft inside, this is a slotted screw adjuster for the hammer strike, turn it either way with a small flat end screwdriver to adjust the hammer soft or loud or to turn it off completely. Good newer vinyl power cord with vintage Bakelite plug. Stands 6-1/2 inches tall. 8-1/4 inches wide at the center. 3-1/2 inches deep. 3 pounds well packaged.
