Antique 1900's Folding Wood SCHOOL DESK w/INKWELL! Restore or Repurpose
Up for sale is a vey old wood and metal school desk in original condition. Untouched and with all the years of use. Memories, and charm, this desk dates from the early 1900's. This can be an"Eclipse" folding desk, but I am not sure as it is unmarked from what I see. It is not cast iron, and has some rust as shown. It is blonde oak, and the best part about it is the inkwell, which is not only very hard to find in these old desks, but shows the age, as this was used when inkwells were needed. The seat folds as shown in some of the photos, and there would be another desk like this in back of it for the user of this desk to sit in. Large brass inset drawer pulls adorn the lower front section along with decorative brass fasteners. The desk attaches to two wooden X leg bases. The bases are faux gilded and slightly distressed. There are large, wooden, faux gilded knob finials on the end of each leg(both top and bottom of the legs) The desk is marked under a side drawer. It is from the Drexel line of Oxford Square and the piece is dated 1/1971. This is rare. Hard to find piece. It is exceptional both in style and in quality. It is in very good condition with expected signs of age/use. There is one water glass mark on the top which is not too distracting. There are, of course, minor scuffs. However, overall the desk looks fantastic with minimal scarring. We purchased the desk along with a matching end table. It is listed separately. The desk is 35" tall. It is 54" long and is 24" deep(desk section) and 25.5" deep from the wooden finials. Nice 19th century traveling writing desk. Wood veneer is broken in a couple of places. There are old repairs to the veneer. As well. There is a little brass key inside. We couldn't get the lock to work. The wtiting surface is covered in green felt, in good condition. The bottom is covered in red felt. The interior has some ink stains. Hinges are in good repair. Vintage Wood Sailing Ships Perpetual Desk Calendar 1930's Early-1940's
This auction is for a v intage Perpetual Calendar with clipper ships or sailboat designs made by I believe possibly Syracuse Ornamental Company.But not sure as it has no MFG markings.I think the base is made of a molded wood pulp type wood. I believe this item to be circa 1930's early1940's era. The wood patina does show wear(see photos)I think a little furniture polish would bring back some of the patina. The date and month cards are made of heavier card paper type stock. Printed on both sides and in about good condition. The card holder has anchored on each end by clipper ships or sailboats and tied together with a sea shell design in the center. The back of this piece is decorative as is the front. French Louis XVI Antique Satin Wood Marquetry Writing Secretary Desk Chest Table This is a magnificent Louis XVI style antique Secretary Desk leather top writing desk with satin wood burl wood insets and superb marquetry and parquetry bordering on satin wood grained fronts and sides with finely engraved brass mounts. Dolphin feet, and drawer pulls. It measures about 32 inches(81.28 cm) tall by 25.2 inches(64 cm) wide by 16 inches(40.64 cm) deep. It weighs over 41 pounds(18.6 Kg) by itself. Without any packing materials. It features two pull out drawers with wavy. Curved fronts, plus a slide out pull out leather topped writing desk platform that also can be taken completely out. The drawers are all dove tailed joined indicating earlier era construction and show aged wood inside. There is magnificent marquetry pinstripe bordering very finely ... moreinset wood pieces that are only found on the more exceptionally crafted pieces. Here's what I stated about this gorgeous cabinet's condition: One wood split crack and chip of inlaid veneer marquetry on front middle of bottom drawer. The drawers have some resistance when pulling out. But the can be pulled out completely and fairly easily, but just have some snug fit little tug drag to them, as does the slide out writing desk platform, but not at all a problem and just not real easy and loose pulling out. Some minor surfaces scratches, but other than these remarkably well preserved and beautiful condition dovetail joined antique writing desk cabinet. Truly an incredibly beautiful and stand out showcase piece that is hard to find one as remarkably crafted as this. So you may want to grab it quick, before it is gone! This is one really cool piece of history! There are ink wells and pencil cutouts for seven people/employees. It is straight on one side and curved on the other side. See the pics as to how I squared it up on a trailer to best show the curvature. It is 138" long by 88" on the curved side. I am not certain if this was used as a school desk. Banker's desk, gaming table, courtroom desk, or? If you have any thoughts of how it may have been used or where it was originally from please feel free to share your knowledge with me. Arizona a couple of years ago and believe it may have come from the sale of the contents of an antique store somewhere near Jerome, Arizona. This is just my assumption as other items at the auction that day had price tags on them as if they were from an antique store and the auction website made mention that they were selling some items from Jerome. Lift top desk with ink well holder. Pen/pencil tray both on and in desk. Desk is adjustable forward and back on its supports by about 1” T he hinge mechanism holds desk lid in any position. Patent information stamped on hinge dates to late September 1925. Chair is bent wood with integral swivel and height adjustment. Swivel is spring loaded and allows the chair to rotate about 45 degrees either side of forward to allow student easy access to his or her desk. Steel tubular frame is extremely rugged and angled to reduce floor space required and provide stability from tipping over. Maple for durability and good looks. Seat spindles provided improved ... moreback support compared to other desk chairs at the time. Desk shows typical signs of use such as pencil and crayon marks but overall the surface finish is quite nice. Wood can be refinished as desired. Steel frame shows some surface rust in some places which can be easily cleaned and repainted authentically using today’s paint matching capabilities. Some history about the Kenney Brothers design: This ability for adjustment was a critical requirement based on studies of childhood ergonomics back in the 1910’s. Henry Wolkins sold office equipment to many schools in the Boston area in the late 1800's including Harvard University and Harvard Medical School. His father. FLH Wolkins came to the USA from Bremerhaven, Germany in 1855. He was a fresco artist and calligrapher whose works can be seen throughout the city and has been exibited in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. In 1902 Henry Wolkins merged his company with a furniture company named Kenney Brothers. Yew is a native English wood that has a very mellow color and straight grain that is often complimented with bird's eye like burls. The result is a very pleasing wood. Further complimenting this beautiful ... morewood is the choice of a dark green leather writing surface. Leather makes the perfect writing surface. Far superior to wood, metal, or glass. The leather has a border of gold tooling. This desk has eight drawers all of which open and close very smoothly and are constructed with dovetailed joints. The handles are a brass swan neck drop pull which look wonderful against the yew wood. The top three drawers lock with included key. This desk is in very good condition with normal wear that you would expect from a piece of this age in the form of small marks here and there. A beautiful desk, this will make a wonderful addition to any home or office. This desk does separate into three pieces for easier moving. Eight drawers in total provide plenty of storage space. The dark green leather top contrasts perfectly with the yew wood. The green leather is bordered with gold tooling. The drawers feature brass swan neck pulls and the top three drawers have locks. Art Deco Small Wood Desk Secretary Maple Mahogany 20x40 Inches Charming!
No maker mark found. But perhaps I missed it! Exterior woods appear to me to be tiger maple on drawer fronts and mahogany otherwise. Also I'm guessing early 20th century. However I'm not an expert so please judge the age, wood, style etc. yourself. Size: Approx. 20 x 40 inches. Solid with no major damage. Original finish and drawer pulls.
